hi folks you may know ive been on an m3 smg search for a short while. a friends smg recently stopped performing past 4000rpm long story short its a 4k repair job at the main dealer the problem was the gear box went! before this happened it was an urban myth for me but now this incident is seriously making me lean towards a manual now..forgive me for starting the age old debate but am i really safer with a manual? and what warranty should i get that definitley covers engine/gearbox failures without having to write a letter to the MD to get paid out? i'm buying privately not an AUC

SMG is great, particularly when pushing on.
Get one with the BMW warranty intact, this will cover everything. You don't need to buy an auc to get the warranty, mine is a 2002 car & i have just renewed the warranty for another year.
Also bear in mind that you will hear about the odd failure, there are a lot of M3's about.

SMG took me a while to really appreciate, once the initial novelty had worn off. Whilst it is a more than acceptable auto for lazy driving, it can be frustrating when you want to push on. That is unless you play with the controls. In any given journey i flick between auto and manual, change the shift speed and engage / disengage the sport mode. It soon becomes second nature and the car comes alive. So for me it gets a big yes, but I would not have said this at first.

You can't manually change gear quicker than a SMG if that's what you want ?

Over the years I have only heard of one M3 manual gearbox failing 100%, and when I asked what was the problem I did not get any answer, so I put that down to operator error !

There are many painful stories about SMG gearbox Failure.

This post will now be followed by many replies of manual gearbox failurelaugh

Just go and buy an M3, drink alchol, take drugs and have sex, ( not whilst driving) and stop asking so many question, you will need a bus pass by the time you make your mind upgrumpy

Both the SMG and manual are exactly the same gearbox, so if you have a gearbox failure on an SMG it could just as easily have happened on the manual.

The SMG cars just have extra hydraulic control systems to replace the gearstick/clutch pedal.

Yes, I sit corrected, far to easy for me to call it gearbox failure, but I think that most people would realize that
