E46 Key stopped working

Hi, I have an E46 325, 2001.

I no longer have remote central locking it would seem, first one key stopped working, so I swapped over and used the spare. A while later this also stopped working which makes me think its a battery problem. Is the charging unit likely to have failed? If so does anyone know how difficult / expensive it would be to fix this problem.

If you need new keys - cant imagine you would but only the dealer can get them. From reading another forum they charge *around* £200.

Yeah, we tried re-initilasing the keys with no effect. The fact that one stopped working, and then the other one has made me assume that isa battery charge issue. The keys work very occasionally, which is how I know they are stil programmed correctly.

Is there a specific replaceable unit behind the ignition which is responsible for charging?

It does seem like I may have to splash the cash on a garage to get this one fixed...
