Driving along quite happily when steam/smoke starts pouring from the front of the car. Upon stopping I notice that I've left a large trail of anti-freeze up the road

Yes folks, I've fallen victim to the badly routed hose thing rubbing on a sharp bit of engine block. The AA bloke couldn't believe the bad design either. I cacked myself at first and thought I'd have to dive for the bloody fire extinguisher!

Hats off to the AA - showed up in 20 minutes and after a quick bodge I was on my way.

Check for damaged hoses at the back of the motor, seems its only a matter of time.

Hi all,

Here's the location of the offending hose that split. It's not really possible to get a very good shot of it as it's right at the back of the engine.
The lower of the two hoses was originally badly routed and was making contact with the engine block and its either been melted or slashed by a sharp bit of the motor.





Hopefully I've got all that right. Hot anti-freeze is _not_ a nice smell. Basically the AA chap cut the hose, inserted a bit of plastic inner hose between the broken sections and then jubilee clipped and cable tied the thing out of the way.

Yep. There's another problem area at the rear end of the driver's side cylinder head. Hardly any space between head and bulkhead where two heater hoses pass. They're held together at that point by an elasticated sock but limited space means they are rubbing on the end of the cylinder head. Cured this by standing in front of car, laying over engine and take a file to a sharp, machined edge on the rear end of the cylinder head, watch your knuckles
Also cable tied the hoses to the clutch master cylinder pipe and no, there are no hot clutch fluid issues since lol.
I also thought about re-routing using plastic or copper pipes.
