My 996 TT went back to the dealer this week for e/o warranty check (10k miles ) - Oil leak gets investigated , engine gets stripped down and porous block is suspected - any one here had similar prob ?

Thx

I have heard from an ex OPC mechanic of a few early 996tt having engine replacements due to oil leakage. The GT3/GT2/Turbo engine is derived from the GT1. Apparantly there is one join between components where the engine is designed not to have a gasket where normal engines would have one. AFAIK all identifed cases have had new replacement engines under warranty with loan car etc.

2 weeks further on and the block is still away being crack tested. The OPC indicated that they've seen a porous block prob with one other 996TT (2002MY). If this turns out to be the prob with mine , then they've indicated they will replace with a new block, so no new engine in my case. However at the very least I'll be requesting an additional 2 years warranty on the engine if it gets rebuilt. I'll report back on the outcome.

Today , almost 4 weeks after my car went in I finally get confirmation from the OPC that the TT block is porous - to be replaced & the engine rebuilt over the next couple of weeks.
Porsche GB called me out of the blue last week (dealer must have informed them) - offered full standard warranty extended at no charge , free service and a loan of a Boxster S until my car is ready

Only a boxster S ?

If it was me, with a 80k car off the road for so long.. I know i certainly would want more than a Box S as a relacement (no disrespect to the S)

another TT should be doable, or at the very least a 996c4s cab.

I wouldnt stand for a Boxster in replacement for the 'top of the range' porshce.

Now, now, Jamie - the Boxster S is a damn fine thoroughbred - whatever anybody tells you.

Despite horrendous precipitation, the great Don Corleone exposed me to the genius of it's balance and poise at a farcically dangerous Silverstone not so long ago...

Apart from a fantastic soundtrack of nape prickling delight around 7000 rpm, the sheer balleticism on show was an absolute honour to experience: and having driven GregE240's silver machine at Brunters a while back too, an 'S' would be more than acceptable as a loaner.

A truly GREAT car!

No doubt der, the S is a truly awesome car... but its no TT, nor TT replacement.

If I bought a TT, which then proceeded to break, due to a known issue, and off road for nigh on a month, before the problem was identified, and then longer before its returned, I know I certainly would want a Like for Like replacement car, AND some hefty compensation.

It seems that the Compensation element is somewhat there, with the Warranty extension (tho it doesnt actually COST them anything.. its a token) I certainly wouldnt see why I should be disadvantaged simply as the product I was sold was flawed.

Were it me, I would be playing merry hell at the offer of the S, and demanding something befitting the expense I have laid out. a replacement TT, or even a Cab TT just as a SORRY and Thank you for bearing with us.

but, maybe I am too picky ? You tell me.

Oy, Nowvan monkey, send me a large cheque PDQ before I print this orf and show 'er indoors the utterance "Greg's Silver Machine". Expect a filling in from the Little Lady before tea and crumpets on the 12th, me laddo

Amazingly, you confuse her silver machine with mine. Question: How the did you do that?

ok thats not sooo bad still a little bit annoying dropping down.. you would hope they would use this as a chance to shine, and offer a TTcab, partly to promote an up=sell, partly to apologise and remove the sour taste..
