July 2008 photo competition - results
Discussion
Well, July's been and gone and that means it's time for another competition, the theme of which will be chosen by...
And that's just it. Taking the same approach as other recent judges I left it until today to view the entries thread and gathered all the images into one folder. Some didn't fit the bill (IMO) so they were quickly whittled out, however good they may be as individual images. That was about as easy as it got.
From such an extensive and varied field I found it very tough to whittle the remaining entries down into anything resembling a shortlist. As a result the list of notable mentions is longer and perhaps less detailed than in previous months but includes (in no particular order):
Asterix - great timing, good sense of scale
...Mole... - fantastic contrast, that smoke has amazing texture (was this shot analogue?)
fastfreddy - soooo close to the top three
NHyde - such warmth from the colour and subject
ol - simple yet so much detail
omohat - spot-on lighting
john185k - conveys great tranquility
cvp - the shadow completes the image
emagine - lovely landscape and sharp silhouettes
Now, the two runners up...
3: mmertens - extensive use of shadows to really make the subject stand out, but great lighting too.
2: EmmaP - striking and fascinating composition, and fantastic contrast. So many different elements in terms of texture, flow and lighting yet ultimately very simple.
And July's winner, who managed to produce a photo that was not only visually and technically strong, but also enthralling in its use of location...
1: Cabinet Enforcer - brilliantly exposed to capture the just off-centre light coming in through the four "windows". Love the texture on the brickwork above the doorway. Wowed by the contrast of between the debris on the floor and the floor itself. The curve of the tunnel is little more than an implication yet it's so clear what form the structure takes. As for the character in the doorway, I reckon the shot would still have won without him but it adds scale and creates that extra bit of interest in the middle of the frame (besides which, I've got a bit of a feeling you needed someone stood there?)
Well done and thank you to everyone who entered, and now over to Cabinet Enforcer for August's competition. I'm looking forward to it.

Gosh! I am very surprised. Thank you for your comments and selecting my photograph. There were some fine entries last month.
The shot was taken last year. It was the response to a brief set by a very good friend and ex-student of mine in an attempt to get me out and about taking personal photographs. I had wanted to photograph this fly-over (Queens Drive, Nottingham) since it was built some years ago as the light is always great around it in late evening. When I got there I decided to focus on light and shadow and the shape and form of the structure itself.
The winner is well deserved. It is quite stunning, showing excellent control of light and exposure. It would make an excellent book jacket I think.

I'm not quite sure what to say! First time I post pics and this happens, that'll teach me
I have to say that I thought EmmaP's underpass shot was fab, the gentle tone changes, and the way the shuttering marks make the concrete look like wood make the shot for me.
Thanks to AndWhy for judging this month, and I hope that my subject for this month gets as many interesting and varied entrants

Well how about that, a 3rd place in such a high-standard month! Congrats to Emma & Cabinet Enforcer -I do like the tunnel one, of course very close to the topic.
And thanks to my daughter (yes, the one in my picture) who convinced me that was the one to go for from my shortlist!

Cheers Andwhy..... I'm well chuffed to even get a mention.
It was just a chance shot taken while filming on the Stelvio Pass with Lotus. Been filming with the new Evora for a while now.... finally I can talk about it though
In fact if you went to the Motorshow you might have seen my edit on the Lotus stand showing the development of the car.
Thanks again..... I'll be working on the eye one for this month now.... I think I have the bug!
