I'm trying to keep a closer eye on my spending and reckon a good way would be to record all my expenditure in a spreadsheet of sorts.

I wondered if there was a (free) software package out there (similar to MS Money, I guess) that would do this for me, or if I am best just starting a spreadsheet up in Excel?

Looking for any recommendations - I only have one bank account so I don't need a massive amount of features I guess.

Spend 300 quid on an accounting package biggrin

Nah, just use Excel.

Actually, Moneysoft is good, I use it for business, but Excel is good enuf for simple day to day.

Just spent a while setting one up, I'm sure I can add features to it as and when I want to.

Cheerswink.

Yep, but it doesn't really help me attribute transactions to certain things. I want to try and concentrate on reducing monthly spending as much as I can, and if I know where my money is going out and what it is specifically for - rather than "just" another transaction - I think it may help.

+1 apart from that the simple excel spreadsheet is now the perfect example of how not to hack together macros and how best to abuse most of excel's functions to draw pictures and make tables I never look at. Keep It Simple!

As the OP mentions Excel, it's possibly less relevant, but for the archives, I find iBank for Mac OS X to be quite good although I'm yet to upgrade to v3.

My bank's webpage enables you to categorise your transactions, create charts and all sorts of stuff.

Aye, you want to keep the monthly essentials separate from "discretionary" spend.
Spending a ton at the supermarket and 80 quid of it being booze isn't £100 of essentials either. wink
