I'm looking at buying a H reg 320i convertible for a bit of top down fun. Would anybody be kind enough to give me a quick guide as to what to look for.

Whats a fair price to pay for a good one?

Hi,

I ran a 325i not a 320i so can give you some advice. As far as the car goes you have the standard E30 rust on the rear arches and sub frame. Hood is straightforward - it either fits, is in good condition and waterproof or it is not. Rear screens can go milky and crack easily but not too expensive to fix. These engines have a timing belt rather than a chain (as in the E36) so worth looking there. A lot of good info on the BMW UK club and also in Parker's. I would really go for the 325i as the power is significantly better, fuel economy not that worse and all together suits the car better. The 320i does sound nice but is underpowerd - really depends on what driving you do. As far as price goes it is variable at present and obviously seasonal. A good 320i will cost approx 2000 - 2500 which is also very close to a convertible E36 (the better car) but it depends if you want the classic look. Many E30 have been modified but there are quite a few straight ones on eBay or Autotrader.

Also check for rust in the scuttle panel, jacking points. Also check this website which only sells mint old BMW's.
