I have a BMW 318 with the M40 engine and the usual noisy hydraulic tappets. It's been suggested that using engine oil for a diesel, of the correct grade, can help to quiet them down. The thinking behind it was that oil for diesels has more detergents and the like which can help clean out the tappets.

It's due an oil change so thought it may be worth a try. To my mind oil is oil and some 10W40 for diesel isn't going to do any damage. Any thoughts?

No damage whatsoever. The additives package is designed for petrol/diesel engine respectively, but no harm will come either way. And I used ring free (Morris diesel oil) for about 100k on a Porsche 924 we used to own.
