Basic Chevy V8 on carbs will be the simplest way to get to 300hp.
Cheap and cheap spares with plenty of them around to choose from. Very basic electrics.

The ford engines are not as common so spares are not as plentiful although it will do the job if one comes your way at the right price.

Rover V8 are plentifully but you would need to mod quite hard to get 300hp.

wavey Hi Steve. Long time no chat smile

Ooh my, that's a lot of engine for the price yes

On a cheaper budget here's the old school iron block 350

You often see them coming up with an auto box for between £300-800. It is often harder to find a box than it is an engine, and the US was a good source until the £/$ changed recently.

That LS6 is REALLY tempting.. Hey Steve, that's gotta be a bit of you hehe

Small block Chevy is your best bet. Should be OK for spares, they've made about 90,000,000 units so far....

The Ford smallblock is quite small as V8's go, its smaller than the rover and quite a bit smaller than the chevy and still pretty cheap, although it would need some tuning parts to getup to 300Bhp

The TVR AJP V8 is very compact (22 inch cube) but with your budget - only poor engines needing rebuilds would probably be available.

Perhaps a cossie 24V V 6 might be withing budget.

4.6 or 4.9 variants will make 300, or in fact 350 with the right cam fitted.

Just had a thought that might solve your V8 problem, in fact a bit later in the year I may have exactly what you are after. Tried to email you but your profile has emails turned off. If you are interested then send me a PM with a way of contacting you.

True, but the OP wanted a V8 without electricary so I had discounted anything with an ECU and was suggesting a Chevy on a carb.
A Rover V8 on carb will not make 300.

Check out the guy's over at Practical Performance Car then - http://www.ppcmag.co.uk/projectcardetail.asp?id=2

That page hasn't been updated recently and can't remember which block they are using at the moment. Will look it up and post if I remember/ever leave work.
