I am looking at possibly getting some extra welds added to my track/road car. It is a Rover 220 Turbo coupe which has had a few extra brace added already.
However, I have been looking into seam welding the front end or adding extra spot welds in high stress places.

Just to add I am no expert on this area and would like to know peoples opinions on adding extra welds to improve the chassis stiffness.

Is it worth doing? which areas of the car would need to be addressed?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you

It is very unwise simply to seam weld.
The reason being that the stresses which would generally flex through a spot welded seam would transfer to the adjacent panels & stress cracks will appear (particularly on a track car).
If extra strength is required then you need to identify the weak or stress points and spread the load (much in the way of a seatbelt mounting plate) around the surrounding panels.
I hope this helps?

I see, perhaps a few extra spot welds in key areas is a better option?

might be worth seeing if there is any information about for race preparing these cars - I know with my chevette I have the DTV build guide for the rally cars, which tells you where you need to weld in strengthening plates and gives you templates to cut out to help you make them.

I think you'll find you need to 'stitch weld' the seams.

I have read about this breifly. CAn you elaborate a bit more?

Do you suggest that the stich welding should be added to the current spot welds? the car has no seam welding on it.

A welded in roll cage, tied into the suspension turrets would be the best way to go
