Over the past few weeks, during this cold spell, I've noticed that my iDrive screen is very dim first thing in the morning. It looks as if the backlight isn't coming on at all. After about 10 mins it brightens up though.

The car is still under warranty, but do you think the service dept will need to see the fault for themselves before taking any action?

I thought that and realised the screen was in night mode because the autolights had come on - gave myself a severe verbal slapping for that one...

Yours sounds like it may be in night mode or similar - try tweaking the settings in the i-drive menu or it's the dealer I'm afraid.

I'll check that, didn't realise there was a night mode. The screen always looks too bright at night for me. I have to turn the whole dash brightness down with the little wheel by the light switch. This doesn't make any difference in the morning though.

Interesting - today driving in the screen was on day mode even though the lights were on, so it seems it's got sensors to judge whether it's daylight or not which are indepenmdant of the light switch.

I've had exactly this too.

There is a small sensor at the bottom of the screen which, if it does not see much ambient light, assumes darkness. You can test it is working by using a torch to shine light into this sensor which should result in the screen brightening up. If so, then it is working ok and there is just poor ambient light (as seen by the sensor).
