upgrading chip on 996
Discussion
Yes, in theory, you have to tell insurance company.
In practice, it is often difficult to tell the car has been chipped. However, the premium increase may not be very large as the bhp gains will not be very large, and it probably isn't worth the risk of a rejected claim.
Roock do chips through JZ Machtech. AmD will also tune your car. I suppose you'll be lucky to see much more than 10-15bhp.

I have just returned from having my 993 C4 mapped at Colin Belton's Ninemeister in Warrington. Well worth the journey from Aberdeen. Car on Dyno before was 283bhp and is now 309bhp. This combined with his lightened flywheel gives a very NOTICEABLE increase in performance and pickup. Often difficult to feel the difference in a chipped non turbo car (as with my previous M3).
Give him a call .

To the best of my knowledge there are bog all 'genuine' gains to be had from just chipping the 3.4 996 (and the 2.5 Box)
Bugger.....thats next years upgrade down the pan then.
One of these chip suppliers (DA Automotive, something like that) was advertising in Autocar recently, reckoned 20hp above stock on either a 3.4 or 3.6.
Thought that might apply to a 3.2 Boxster engine

I've seen quite a few companies offering minor upgrades to the 3.2 engine and claiming up to 280bhp.
The way to get above this is to use a 3.4 996 engine for 300bhp or so - a noticeable gain over 252bhp or even 260bhp as in the MY03 on...
I have thought if I keep the car...that at, say, four or five years old I might RUF "breathe" on it and get 350bhp or so from a 996 3.6 engine.
Fun. And needn't involve all that Gemballa/RUF "showiness" either....
Greg I dunno about the 3.2 box lump but there are gains to be had from the 3.4 996 & 2.5 Box lumps if you go down the sports cats/exhaust & chip route but its not cheap & the gains are still relitivly small.
All I know is that a few years ago a fair amount of fiddling by people who really do know what they are doing didnt find any noticable gains from just ECU mods on the 2.5 & 3.4 (think 5 bhp 'ish' was about it) unlike the gains achived from previous 911's ie 993, 964 & 3.2 all got reasonable gains.
I think the ad you mean was for DMS, I think Rob at DMS is doing stuff now with Ray West at Thruxton.
I'm seeing Ray next week ref some mods to Kylie so I'll ask him about it.
Don if you did think of that route in a few years, I wouldnt mess about tuning a normal 996 3.6, simply slot in a GT3 lump in.

This all reminds me of when I had a 4.0 Chimaera. I asked my mechanic what the best way to get more power out of it was. He said "Buy a 5.0"
There's a lot of sense in that. If you car isn't fast enough for you, it's quite often cheaper in the long run to just buy a faster car.
Of course, it's also fun to play, which is really what we all want to do

These guys have some reasonable performance gains - I'm in the proccess of sending off my ecu to them in the states - however being a 996TT the gains are far more significant that for the naturally aspirated cars.

As Dave has kindly said we have live remapped his 993VR and gave him more power than an 8k Rooke 3.8 conversion for 500+VAT. All I can say is that we now have the chip emulation package for all 996 & Boxster models and we intent to put together some affordable header/200 cell cat/silencer/remap packages for the 986/96 engine range as soon as we can get around to it. For the 996 we are anticipating a 25-30bhp gain from cat/silencers/remap, price in the region of 2500+VAT fitted. Watch this space.

Any idea who fits these in the UK?
Fancy the stage 1 tune.
Sadly no one fits them in the UK I rang around a bit and even spoke to GIAC in the states - who's chips are being used by people such as Evo and Imagine auto - I then had a conversation with both these two who have software for the uk laws (ie pollution regs etc.) so I've just about decided to next day UPS my ECU over to the states for the stage 1 also - Evo said they'd turn it around within 24hrs - so you'd probably only have the car off the road for a week.
I also notice that dmsautomotive of andover quote similar figures for their stage 1 equivalent on the 996 i.e. 488bhp. Regards the warranty - apparently it is impossible for a Porsche dealer to tell whether the software upgrades have been done and the other parts i.e. diverter valve and airfilter I can't see them whinging about if you get them fitted by the porsche dealer - and yes I was proposing to get that done too. Regards reduction for having two done dunno I'll try emailing them and find out!

I've got the X50, so the stage on of that was showing return of about 520bhp from memory -
Love to see what can be done.
Buster....only asking but are you now on the slippery slope of modification?
Is the X50 car really not enough?
Seriously, I was under the impression that this car was quite possibly the quickest A-B road car..Are you planning on tracking the car?
I am not disrespecting your actions, just intrigued as to why you want to modify the car so soon after you have had it....I am running around with a girly 300 ish bhp 2wd car, I have a lot of fun and could easily get myself in trouble with it.

Not in a grown up way - I do absolutely love the acceleration / raw overtaking power of the car. Really enables you to enjoy 'b' roads.... certainly don't want to go mad but if simple case of revised "car brain" then may be interesting.
I absolutely love the car - no idea what to replace it with so I placed a L.O.I. for the "new" TT.
Just tinkering really!
