hello all,

i'm in the market for some tyres for my 993 c2 and wondered if anyone out there could advise.

so far most people seem to rate michelin pilot sport 2s as the muts nuts, but they are priced accordingly. i've been quoted £324 for a pair of michelin fronts(235/40zr18), or £198 for the same but avons.

the backs are 285/30zr18 and so far the cheapest is £218. are they worth it or is it all talk?

secondly, some guidance on radar detectors/etc(road angel, road pilot, snooper, etc) as these seem to me to be quite pricey are they worth it and which is the best?

Look in the PistonHeads reviews section for help re choosing speed trap detectors/avoiders etc. My personal choice would be an origin blue2. (But I have just got hold of an origin blue1 as a mate was selling it s/h for half price, and I have been spending too much time with resident pikey Iguana recently )

Re tyres, try places like Micheldever Tyres or Bath Road Tyres for the best prices (see google for details). Some people swear by Porsche n ratings, I think things like tyre pressure and general foolhardiness behind the wheel may be more critical. I never liked the Michelin Pilot Sports in the wet, but some report no problems.

People will reel off a whole heap of favourites, including Conti SportContacts etc but I'm a fan of the Goodyear Eagle F1 as it's (comparitively) cheap as chips in some sizes and performs well all round.

If I was doing mainly dry track work I'd probably go for Pirelli P Zero Corsas, Michelin Sport Cups, Dunlop Formula Rs etc, but these can be lethal in the wet.

Hi Git

Strange tyre fitment, ie not factory. Fronts not standard on any 993, rears wide body only (although some do squeeze them in narrow arches. Standard narow body 18" fitment is 225/40 front, 265/35 rear - probably best balanced too .....

S02s, PZ Assymetricos, Contis all have their adherents, Michelin N rated available in some fitments too... just don't skimp !! See other tyre threads...

Cheers, Maurice

So2 always gets the nod from the majority of all 911 owners for road use, problem is its discontinued now & you will struggle to get them. The so3 that replaces it does not recieve such universal praise.

I agree with the SO2s - I couldn't get any recently and changed to Pzero assymetricos and the difference was very noticable (yes, I'm talking about now when they've worn in).

I saw someone posted they had found a supply of SO2s, somewhere on PH. Search to find them, they are worth it.

Melv, there is some dodgy link to a Porsche forum on that tyre page....i assume you intend to amend the link to a proper Porker forum at some point?

On a practical point, the SportContact 2`s have (had)a protruding bead/strip, in the centre of the side wall, which overhangs 18" wheels nicely and provides a tiny amount of extra protection to polished rims!
