Hi there,
I'm new to this forum, found it a few weeks ago from CJ's build site.
It,s coming to the time when I should be ordering my engine from American Speed and I could do with a bit of advice as to what would be the best to go for as my knowledge of engines is some what limited.
I won't be racing it apart from the occasional track day so something mid range is what I had in mind. How does that sound?
P.S. I'm having the time of my life building this and looking forward to driving it next summer.
Thanks.

First welcome to the forum.
My recommendation would be to choose the power you want then select the largest engine producing that power.
The larger engine will be less stressed than the smaller engine, of the same power, so should last longer and will probably have better road manners.
What power to have is a difficult matter, go too small and you will affect its resale value. Go big (like CJs) and you make it worse for the next builder as the ‘perceived’ standard engine size continues to rise.
How fat is your chequebook?

Gaz - Have a good long chat with Gail at AS. I never even brought my engine from them, yet he still had the time to talk through some options open to me for my self-build. He should be able to guide you through (without pushing you towards the bigger $$$$$$ engines, if you don't want to spend big $$$$$$)

Steve D has raised some good points. When I first got into Ultimas 350 - 400 bhp was the norm. This has now moved up towards 500+ I honestly believe that, on the road at least, 450 bhp is plenty. Not because that is about where my car is but because it is a good balance between cost and power.

Now I stand back and wait to be flamed.

Make sure that you get an engine that will accept a standard chevrolet oil pan. I bought a dart alloy block and wiated 3 months for a custom pan to be made that would fit the chassis.

Hi,
Thanks for the help.
Steve, Paul, what you say makes a lot of sense.
I had in the back of my mind somewhere between 450 and 500 so that has helped a lot thanks.
Also I was a little bothered by the amount of comments on the forum about overheating.
Do you have oil coolers on yours?

I shall ring American speed early next week as soon as I have converted the $ into £ and have a chat with Gail.
Is that really a guys name?

My cheque book started out quite plump, but by the time my GTR is on the road and with the extras like AP brakes and air con, it will be suffering from anorexia and need hospital treatment.

You will need to put in an oil cooler and I would also recommend an Accusump for those high G moments.

I have accusump, cooler, oilstat and a remote filter.

You may also want to consider the remote filter as I am told that the sandwich plate for the cooler takeoff pipes places the filter lower and almost against the chassis cross rail. The way to change the filter is to unbolt the engine mount and jack up that side of the engine.

I am going to have my exhaust ceramic coated, which will help reduce engine bay temperature.

Steve,
Thanks again for the advice.
I was planing on fitting an accusump anyway but will now add an oil cooler to my shopping list.
I will also ask at the factory about remote filters when it comes to getting the bits and pieces for the engine.
I have asked Andy to get a G50 box for me, apparantly they are getting harder to come by.

Ceramic coating the exhaust system sounds expensive though,
I think I shall see how it runs before I go there.

Gaz,
The remote filter is much more convenient to change. I'm running the accusump, oil cooler, and a Canton oil filter that gets particles as small as 8 micron. Just remember to purchase the "check valve" that keeps the oil from flowing in reverse when the accusump pumps. Its plumbs in line with your oil lines.
I prefer to mount my oil temp sensor after the oil cooler, and I filtered my oil before the oil cooler. Also, its a good idea to save all of these tips like this and keep them in a file You'll get a lot of advice from this forum.
450-500hp will be more than enough fun. I'm running this much and haven't had the car past 2/3rds throttle. It will give you something to grow into and enjoy for many years.
Cheers!
