Extreme 996s

Essen plays host to extreme Porsches

The Essen Show always brings out the wildest of Porsche conversions from the local companies.

Gemballa can always be relied upon to show something extravagent and this year it was their interpretation of the new 996 Turbo Cabriolet. A new front valence with distinctive grilles at the front, the skinniest of tyres on the largest wheels and contrasting grey detailing help set this car apart from its stock cousin.

Hamann wheeled out an evil looking black 996 complete with the company's trademark gullwing doors.

Is the Gambella a Turbo Cab' or a Boxter with Turbo style child brearing hips?

Hard to tell from that angle.

I always the preffered the slim-line RUF CTRs myself.

I must be getting old, every day I want a 911 more.

Spent half the weekend playing Project Gotham Raing 2 and always seemed to go for the Porsches, even though they are all evil-fishtailing b@stards to drive!

Want one!

That first one almost looks like a new mr2 with the factory fitted bodykit... then again at a distance boxsters do have that mr2 look... or is it that mr2s have that boxster look?

Must confess I was told the first car was a Boxster but surely it's a 996...?

Really not an easy one,,,i would honestly say it was a Boxster, with 996 facelift front headlights....
Anyhow why would you make a 996 appear like a Boxster,
not knocking the fine handling Boxster but that is taking inverted snobbery a little too far.

I dunno. I reckoned it was a Boxster when I saw it at first glance, then I read your editorial. You wouldn't lie to us, right?

It's a Boxster. Notice the two rollover bars behind the two seats.

that and the lack of rear seat gap and curvier lower rear rump,,gave me the clue,,but the front lights are definitely more tear drop than the regular Boxster fried eggs,,,,,Ted do we get our Porsche spotter badges yet?

Yep, I was wrong. It is in fact a Boxster S with 375bhp form a 3.9 litre motor.

Do you think porsche will ever give the boxster the grunt it deserves? - I had hopes of an RS once but it looks like I`m going to have to spend my money on a car with an inferior layout...

Should've got to this thread earlier, you can tell the 1st is a Boxster in a few ways, as clubsport already mentioned - why make your 996 look like a lesser model? If you can facelift the 996 lights you can facelift the Boxster's front without too much trouble....especially for Gemballa.

The air intake is in the Boxster position and shape as opposed to the Turbo's one which is higher up in the 'hips'.

Also the lack of 996-esque overhang with the pointed tops of the boxster rear end and the silver spoiler.

...and Shadowninja I'll give you that this looks like an MR2.

The car looks like the Gemballa Roadster GTR in black which I think has been on PH before?

.............now, about those Porsche spotter badges

I'll have the Techart flavoured one please
