golf gt tdi mk4 abs sensor 'i' light on
Discussion
hi i have the chance to replace my clio for a 1999 vw golf gt tdi with 100k on clock, only trouble is guy tells me the abs works fine but the front sensors have been removed and it needs tlc with the electrics and the 'i' light is on. i have been told this could be cause the sensors have been removed or its the steering angle sensor or something. i would have thought if it was the sensors then removing them would stop any lights coming on once they are reset! what could be the real problem here any ideas of what it could be and cost roughly please please help. i dont mind spending a little but again dont want to have a death trap cocting too much to repair for myself to be in or my family etc thanks steve
If something like a sensor has been removed, or a switch disconnected, it's usually 'cos the repair bill would have cost a fortune.
I remember my car had a non functioning sunroof when I got it, I had a look, nice easy fix, turns out it was just the switch disconnected!
Within the hour I had the sunroof out and pulling one from a breaker shell I had as it opened up, and jammed solid, and it was getting a little cloudy...
Just the switch, he said...

A dead wheel speed sensor will cause this. By the time the car reaches this age sometimes they need to be drilled out. I had to have mine replaced by a local garage (was pushed for time and needed to attend a wedding reception 5hrs drive away <24hrs time) who needed to drill the old one out. Maybe your man has tried to do this and cocked it up then just decided to leave it. Mine failed after a big ABS-testing stop due to someone pulling out.
Info on the steering angle sensor I found was extremely vague (apparently when this fails the warning light pattern is the same as per the wheel speed sensor) and involved taking the steering wheel off.
Ultimately VAGCOM or whatever it's called now will give you the error code needed to discern where the failure is but as someone else has posted... why bother.
Warning lights due to failed components but everything 'still works'? Nah
--edit, didn't realise this thread was so old, only went back half a dozen pages...
