Has anyone ever built a vert ramp or half pipe in their garden?

seeing as its made of wood, can you just build one on a whim, like with a garden shed ?

i have a 37' x 18' space that i 'could' in theroy build one eventually ( a garden )

would i be attacked by the local councils clipboard patrol ?

ETA : Bit of an extreme example... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_1Y8UoLIu4

As long as it isn't permanent, and isn't over 6 foot, I doubt its anyone else's business.

A friend did this once. Neighbours didn't like the noise or people appearing over the fence line.

Friend of mine builds modular ramps that can be packed away with ease.... he's a skater but would build something more bike specific i am sure smile

I guess the ppl next door wouldent really be bothered. as long as nobody was on it all hours of the day and night 24/7

the fence between the neibours on one side is low anyway, and on the other side, they just covered their garden in concrete years ago and have never been out there ever again lol.

thx for the link regarding a ramp builder. but i was really hoping to do this as a long term project and slowly build it up over time. ( i love a good project! )

but if im limited to 6ft in hight then so be it.

would rather have a 15ft vert though lol hehe

Cool, well we expect pics as the project progresses!

For a while, some friends of mine in Edinburgh rented a house with a double garage and Rusty put a ramp inside, accompanied by lighting, heaters and tunes - perfect place to spend a cold Scottish Sunday in February!

Would have been fun taking it down and rebuilding though... smash

that 6ft ramp does look good. maybe 15ft would be a little excessive lol

found some pretty decent plans

and it can also be added to to make it taller if needs be.

I did several DIY quarter pipes in the '80's.

Looking back I think the only reason the neighbours put up with the noise was the fact that their kids were on it all the time* laugh

  • which in this day and age opens you up to all manner of ambulance chasers...

You had better ask your neighbours first. I suspect if there is any noise or visible structure at all, they will easily get the council to remove it.

I have to agree depending on how close you are to them.

It is amazing how some nice neighbours can turn into grumpy gits when people start having (noisey) fun. They may also feel you are invading their privacy when standing on top of the ramps.

oooook then.

just popped down to the park to try out the 4ft half pipe thats just been built down there on my MTB.

i could barely drop in without crapping myself!

that would be absolutely no problem on my blades... hmm.

the flat of the half pipe was much too short for the mtb ( few inches longer than the whole bike )

so im guessing the bmx would ride it much better ( when i get one )

and finally... i dont sweat this much on a mtb ride. these half pipes are absolutely exhausting!

I never got on with ramps. I used to be pretty ace on my skateboard, kick flipping down the road. But when it came to dropping in on a ramp I was terrible. I never stuck at it to master it, which is a major regret. Now I'm too old for all that.

When I lived in California, one of my room mates built a 1/4 pipe in the back garden. It was similar to the blue half pipe above. It's not hard to build out of 18mm ply and could be done in a weekend.

I'd say go for it as there's little to lose even if you do have to take it down.
