I've got an interview for a job in a couple of weeks down there and wondered what the place is like as I've never been. Best / worst places to live in / out of town etc etc.

Surprisingly pleasant, actually. Lacking in character and history, but makes up for that by being pretty car friendly. Plenty of pleasant places to live, although the newer estates are a lot more cramped than the 80s-90s builds. Lots of green areas and park land scattered around. The less pleasant areas are pretty easy to identify, but even then they're not as bad as some bigger towns/cities.

Crack, heroin, violent crime and netto, one of the most vile places I have ever had the displeasure to spend a period of time. Along with Luton, Northampton et al, all utter stholes.

hth

ETA I'm sure there are some nice parts!

hehe a couple of great replies there. Positivity in such negative times is hard to come by. winksmile

The comments are, of course, welcomed.

So if not living in MK itself, where in the surrounding area is best?

Whereabouts is your job likely to be based, North or South MK?

As already mentioned it is a little soulless, but relativeky pleasent. Furzton, Shenley Church End, MK Village etc are all quite nice. Avoid placs such as Netherhall, Coffehall, Beanhill, Fishermead, Oldbrook (you'll soon learn the dodgy areas.)
It's very car friendly and great shopping for the missus.
I lived there for about 5 years though if I were to ever have to go back I'd be looking at the outlying villages such as Woburn, Woburn Sands, Aspley Guise etc.

Think you mean Netherfield for the first one - awful place...add Conniburrow as well...and parts of Heelands. My experience is there's a few unemployed people on benefits who like to buy a cold single can of Tennents Super from the offie throughout the day - cold Buckfast is another good seller to a large Scottish contingency. I always wondered if they didn't have fridges...but then understood that there were a lot of alchies there.

...Just like any other large conurbation then, although its car friendly, easy to navigate, easy to go north/couth from

Oh, and I'd live in newport Pagnall. Opposite the old Aston factory, ideally...

It's for Lockheed Martin.....and reading the attachment that's only just come down the email pipe it's actually Ampthill....so no idea where that is in relation to MK.

Ampthill is fine - even got a Waitrose. It's also not Milton Keynes.
The Lockheed site is at the entrance to Ampthill coming from Bedford direction.

You could do worse than find a place in MK Village, Old Farm Park or Monkston if you're working over there - as you'd be easily within reach of the road towards the M1 and on towards Bedford.

We lived in Monkston for 2 years. It's nothing special, but it's affordable and quiet.

I liked MK, as others have said, it's one of the most car friendly big towns in the UK, I can't ever remember being stuck in traffic.

Quick rail link into London or Birmingham, and not far from Luton Airport.

I'd move back if I needed to work over that way again.

Flitwick seemed quite nice. Visited my cousin there once. Modern (well, 80s) housing estate in the countryside.

MK is a very character-less. It's really just a retail park with a housing estate bolted on. I suppose you could argue that a village is just a handful of piss poor shops with a housing estate bolted on, mind.

Evenings will find the er... what do they call it? theatre district? well, the bars filled with drunk chavs shouting at each other.

Driving around the area is a bit like Gran Turismo's SS5 circuit, mind... took a friend out for a spin in the TVR. When I parked up, the brakes were smoking. Never experienced that before outside of a trackday. whistle

Out of interest, how'd you find the job? A recruiter? Coincidentally I've just been looking on their site for jobs and after selecting the UK it turned up 5 jobs in the US. wobble

Yes, it was through an agency. Quite a nice surprise I got the interview tbh.

Ampthill is quite a nice traditional town, gets busy with traffic though (i used to drive through it everyday to avoid the horror which is the A421). The LM site is at the Northern most point of the town and give a view across the fields to Millbrook Proving Ground, so always plenty chances to see some exotica.

If you are working out there, then there are lots of villages/small towns to look at first before troubling Milton Keynes for buying property. It is a bit away from everything else, so you would need to come into MK or Bedford (which is probably nearer distance wise) for anything major. Although you can pickup ThamesLink trains to London from Flitwick which is the next place going South.

MK is a great place though, I moved there for my job (which at the time was in Eversholt, next door to Ampthill, but moved offices to MK) about 3 years ago. As long as you avoid the areas mentioned previously, there are some nice places to live. Given the nature of the city the houses are more new-build types, but if you want country living then dont live within the city as there are plenty of places within a few miles.
Beware that MK is prime commuter territory, so house prices reflect it is only 30 min from London Euston.

MK is great to live near for amenities, they have shops that not every town has- John Lewis, Ikea etc, fun stuff like Snowdome/Airkix, good travelling in as well- roads are just so easy, you cannot get lost
However we have to travel through it every day for work- those pesky roundabouts play havoc with your brakes and tyres hehe

I would be joining as the Master Scheduler. So I'm guessing something akin to the BAe Central Projects Office.
