Missus is looking into flights back to the UK from Dubai, where we live. Results are baffling.

On several major airlines, including BA, Virgin and Emirates, flying Dubai-London-Dubai costs around 600 pounds each.

Yet flying the same airlines, at the same time, going London-Dubai-London, is only around 300 pounds.

Now, why would this be? Is it just shameless mark ups or is there more to it than that?

Maybe they're trying to set the price so that you use up the same amount of your gross earnings to buy a ticket! hehe

People in Dubai have more money than people in the UK?.

Does it really only cost 300 nicker?. Might have to look into that.

Try Qatar Airways, not only one of the best airlines I have ever used but pretty good value to.

Edit to add London to Dubai Via Doha( Qatar) for 243.70 Return.

Were you looking on their UK websites?
If so it is usually because the UK based site has the best contracts and more demand for flights leaving the UK so will have cheaper fares. They don't however have as much demand for people in the UK wanting to fly into the UK then back out again hence the fares being more expensive and having I would guess fewer options.

Not sure which sites she was looking on. We've managed to find cheaper fares, but I was curious as to how and why journeys of exactly the same length could vary in cost so dramatically.
So you're saying that the more demand means discounts? Is 600 more indicative of the actual cost of the flights then?

Demand does mean discounts in theory. Basically UK agents or UK websites of airlines won't have many specifically negotiated contracts for a Dubai-UK-Dubai flight as they barely sell any whereas the Dubai based site or agent will have loads as they sell them all the time. The UK agent/site will just go on whatever the published rates available to UK punters are rather than trying to get any special deals.

Perhaps it is that BA currently have a sale on for ex-UK flights, (which Virgin are no doubt matching)? Sale ends 22nd September.

Is it ramadan? Might be all the locals trying to get away for some fun.

It seems to be pretty standard at the moment- if your departure point is the middle east, you pay more. Same from Dubai/Bahrain with Emirates / Etihad / Gulf Air / Qatar etc. The cost difference was even more accentuated a few months back when the pound was so weak.

Yes, it's Ramadan, but typical flight costs have stayed at the same price as they were before (from Bahrain at least).

I never understand the Airline pricing game

Looking at flying the US in april where i want to fly to Atlanta or Washington as cheap as poss. some airlines do connecting flights and some go direct. The cheapest connect via another airport then onwards to the destination. I looked at flying direct to the connecting airport but to fly to there you have to get a connecting flight confused

i.e. LHR to Atlanta flys via Charlotte but LHR to Charlotte flys via Washington confused is is more expensive.

Think i'll walk, it'll be easier
