I've got a Dell Optiplex GX280 that I use for WP and PagePlus, website creation updating using Serif X and video editing. I have 2 x 512meg RAM (PC2-3200 DDR2-SDRAM) with two spare slots. I want to increase the memory as I am now using rather large picture files and the video takes a bit as well.

I was aiming to double it. Can I buy another 2 x 512 modules, specifically this quicklink for Dabs 3HMYWS, or do I have to buy 2 x 1GB.

I don't intend to keep the computer for more than a few months - I've had a few problems with it over the last 18mnths but I can't afford what I want at the moment. So the £15 or so I'll save seems sensible to me.

Thanks for reading so far. And sorry to be so ignorant.

adding two more 512mb should be fine if you have the slots, I am sure I have seen GX280 systemboards with either 2 or 4 slots though.

Where does £15 come from? Even on Dabs it's only an extra £3 for 1GB over 512MB. If you go to crucial.com then it's only £1.50 more. I reckon an extra £3 (or £6, if you insist on using Dabs) for 2x1GB, giving you 3GB RAM rather than 2GB, is worth it. Particularly if you're manipulating pictures you can never have too much RAM smile

If you go to http://www.crucial.com/uk/?click=true then you can scan your computer and they will tell you and show you what you can upgrade to. They deliver very fast and I have never had any problems at all. (assuming thats what you are looking for)

It feels rather spooky having my insides checked. But thanks for that.

You'll sometimes find it's cheaper to buy more - depending on how old the technology is and how many chips they need to make the RAM sticks...

If there's one thing NOT to economise on with your computer (especially if you make a living using it), it's RAM. Buy as much as you can afford, within reason.

I also recommend Crucial - I buy ALL my memory from them, and their customer service is excellent with a no-quibble return policy. I've had a duff stick replaced in 24 hours, and bought the wrong type of RAM once, without being penalised for the exchange (I asked them for the right stuff, they sent the correct sticks and I returned the mistaken sticks - only cost was postage).

And in all the RAM purchases I've made from them (I get through a lot of laptops... and the first thing I do when getting a new laptop is to max it out with memory), I've only had one bad stick, which they replaced in 24 hours. Quality seems to be pretty good.

Very clever, quick & simple.

Think I'll go from 1gb to 3gb smile
