Hi people, does anyone have a Neutral Bias spring fitted to their gearbox, Remote type? Does anyone have one they want to sell?

I am fitting a 5 speed box and it is missing from the kit and I have been told that they have no idea when there will be more in stock.

Anyone have any ideas, as my car is in the in the workshops and the bill is going through the roof!

Cheers

Dont mean to worry you or anything but there is a chap on this board who has a mate with a Cooper Sport 5 thats been a 4 speed for a while due to lack of parts because JKD stopped making them.

Paul is this still the case?

Yep, I've got the bias spring on my JKD 5 speed, sorry I've not got one spare. I'll check with "my man" to see if he's got one.

Hmmmm, I thought there were still parts available for the Helical 'box..... Not a problem for me with the straight cut gear set but...... Perhaps JKD are waiting for enough orders to do a batch manufacturing run ??

Parts have not been too much of a problem for me. I have had to make a few bits and modify a couple of bits but nothing too bad. JK are having problems I think. Called them and faxed them but no reply as of yet. Also I see the Mini Spares are producing a 5sp box anyone have any info on this? I understand that its the Torque that kills these boxes, if you have a really potent engine it just rips 5th out. I am running a 1293 with SW5 cam nothing too large as I am going to use it for a daily runner till I save enough to get an Elise, yeah rite! Will have to sell my other cars first.

Appreciate people looking for me. I am really stuck with out it, so I am told.

I'm not sure what the problems are, I've not had any problem at all with mine (It survived a blown engine due to a broken crank.......), but mines the straight cut syncro version. The sideways or thrust loading due to helical gears might cause casing or bearing problems, or perhaps excessive wear on the gear teeth ?? Not sure.....

The hardest worked gear is 5th, as such I was told to drive it properly i.e. change down the 'box and use the gears, not to accelerate from low rpm in 5th..... Not a problem as my motor doesn't really come alive until 3000rpm (torque is related to speed, and is multiplied by the gearbox, I seem to remember ??)

Also I have probably only done about 10k on it, including motorway and trackday use. (Obviously 5th is irrelavant on most tracks !!)

MiniSpares and MiniSport advertise 5 speed boxes. MiniSpares changed supplier last year ? since their original "TranX" developed units, but I've not anything about either so can't really comment.

The TranX one is the weakest of all? I have been told the same regarding 5th, use it an over-drive and always change up, never punish it. I have a 3.4 diff so i hope it will be good for the M-way

I didn't say that !! I've no experience of anything other than what I've got, so I can't comment. I'm sure that for MiniSpares to be confident enough to sell it, the TranX product was fine. I know they did many miles of testing on it, both dyno and road driving on both mini's and metro's including a modified metro turbo.

Yeah, it was the Sport 5 at the Virginia Waters meet last time, it had a bearing fail and JKD wouldn’t supply the parts to fix. Not sure if the other 5 speed boxes are the same but a know Bill Richards doesn’t like them.
