New house - phone line.
Discussion
Soon to be moving house (13th Oct). A few questions.
When we move in there will be no phone line setup and thus no internet as well.
Is it a good idea to ring up a while before moving in and arrange for them to come and sort this for once we're moved in? I'm hoping to not be weeks without a phone line and internet, or are they normally pretty prompt and they'll be there within the week?

Prepare to be amased at how fking useless BT are
It took them over a month to turn a perfectly working phoneline the pervious occupants had into a perfectly working phone line for us
Just had a new phone line reconnected with BT, using their 'free' installation offer. Booked appointment for a week later before going on hols. Day of the installation the guy was on my doorstep at 1pm on the dot - I had an afternoon appointment that could have been between 1pm and 6pm.It took them over a month to turn a perfectly working phoneline the pervious occupants had into a perfectly working phone line for us
Installation complete in one hour, no probs.

We are getting everything through sky
They charge £60 irrespective of if they have to come into the house to wire it up, or whether they just activate it.
I think BT are £120 something or other.
If you are planning to get sky, may want to consider getting the whole lot with them
sign up for 18 months and its free with bt .They charge £60 irrespective of if they have to come into the house to wire it up, or whether they just activate it.

problems can be caused if people in house at the moment are with a different service provider to the one you want to use as the copper pair is not available until other sp ceases it .
is this a new build of your own or a developer?
I bought a new build by Persimmon and was told my line wouldnt be active and that i'd need someone round to sort it/ BT wanted £120, Sky wanted ~£25.
When Sky came out they said the line was already active. It wasn't on the day i moved in because i plugged a phone in and it was dead, but it was by the time Mr Sky (actually Mr BTOpenWorld) came out.
Maybe worth holding off to check?

I booked my install three weeks before I was due to move in, with a confirmed install date of the day after I picked up the keys to the house.
Suffice to say, BT fooked up royally, eventually installing the line 6 weeks after the original date and after they'd billed me for a duplicate account by mistake. Muppets.
My advice, give them as long as possible, because whatever you do they'll take longer than they quote, almost certainly.

The current owner isn't living there at the mo, but I believe that he has a telephone line set up (flat is currently empty).
With this in mind, I'm guessing they can sort it out from their cozy office? I'm guessing mind as I know nothing on the subject.
possibly ,all depends on how long its been off for .With this in mind, I'm guessing they can sort it out from their cozy office? I'm guessing mind as I know nothing on the subject.

took 2 days for the phone to be connected but then a further 2 weeks for internet...stupid as the engineer had to visit to uncouple the exchange for the phone (moving from BT to Sky and was an old exchange or something) but then internet which didnt need a visit took fookin ages
broadband would have reqd exchange work ,it's quite common for the broadband work to be done after the line is installed .god knows why though.Gassing Station | Homes, Gardens and DIY | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
