Trying to sort brothers network - For some reason the wireless has gone intermittently slow - i.e. DL at 250kbps. Hard wire into the router, you get 5mbps, second laptop tested displayed a very slow wireless as well. Occasionally, and only for a few seconds, wireless will jump to a good 4mbps +, but 99% of the time 250kb...

any thoughts or methods to approach it? Router is a netgear N.... erm... N something or other and only a couple of months old

for starters you need to figure out if anything has changed in the RF environment at home - have next doors got a wireless video sender, baby monitor, or 20m ham radio antenna outside (dont laugh, have seen it!)

If youve changed nothing in the router/adapter and they are configured optimally, then something has changed in the environment....

download SSIDer software and see what other wireless networks are visible - it may be there are many more now

802.11n in channel bonding mode needs nearly all of the 2.4Ghz wi-fi band, basically 80Mhz slap bang in the middle, so its hard to move it either side of other interference, without putting it back to 802.11g 54Mbps and moving to channel 1 or 11 at the extremes

im afraid if it is outside interference, then theres not much you can do about it other than that .....
