I have an old boiler (Gloworm condensing from the late 80's) and it is controlled from an old timer on the wall which allows me to have it coming on at a particular time, switching itself off t whatever time you elect by moving the sliders.

It is connected to the electric supply and forces the boiler itself to swing into action at the pre-determined times.

I would like to fit a modern timer control but I am unsure if this is possible. I want to be able to programme electronically when it comes on and turns off, several times a day i.e. first and last thing on an evening.

Is it possible to simply wire a modern control unit in to an old boiler? No pun intended there with my last sentence.

Should be easy enough. I bought a Thermostat like the one you mention (time zones with set temp) and it was literally a relay to switch live a contact on the boiler...

I just bought one of these:

http://is.gd/4sO6E

It is programmable, lets me set a range of on/off times over 7 days (independent for each day) and each on/off cycle is set to either "normal" or "low" so it will come on at 5am on Monday at 21deg, drop to 18deg at 7am, back up to 21deg at 3pm and so on. It simply switches the boiler on and off (2 wires)

Got a Honeywell ST6400 controller fitted with my condensing boiler a few years back. Brilliant piece of kit with separate settings for heat and water which can be varied for every day of the week if required. However the room stat had to be replaced because the existing 20year old one wasn't compatible, so there might be issues with older pre-electronic equipment.
