HTC/XDA screen input broken?

My XDA Orbit 2/HTC Polaris has just stopped all input to the screen.
A week or so back, in the centre of the screen a rectangle appeared in funny colours under certain light - assume the sensor material got broken - but no idea how as no damage/dropping of the phone.
It seemed to work fine, if a little less responsive, but today it won't work at all. On a touch screen phone, this is a small issue!
I'm under contract (18 month) for another month, but not back in the UK till the contract end date. Will they repair it, or claim I must've hit the screen? There's no issue with the actual display itself - works fine and always had a screen protector on it.
