In process of remodelling the kitchen and have a pair of Boston Acoustics DSi455 speakers spare.

They may well end up in the garage ceiling, but is there any reason (apart from the weight) I couldn't use them in the back shelf of a car?

Cheers.

As long as the amp is up to the job of driving them, nope.

Car speakers IIRC are usually 4ohms and house is 8ohms so it ain't a good match.

An amp stable at 4ohm driving 8ohm speakers will be fine.

The other way around would cause issue.

But with less volume. 4 Ohm speakers are used in a car mainly because you get more sound from them than 8 Ohm jobbies due to the 12v feed, this was sidestepped when they invented SMPS but that was the original reason.

I would suggest a car presents a much harsher environment compared to the comfort of a home. Think about:
  • vibration (not just caused by the sound)
  • wide variation in temperature
  • moisture

^^^^^Considering you can pick up some custom fit Alpine speakers for only £25+ I think you would get a better sound than hacking the car about to fit something designed for another use

Speakers on the back shelf are a bad idea in any case.

Thanks all for the advice, hadn't thought of the 4 v 8 ohm thing.

Probably too nice to bodge into the car anyway, garage ceiling here they come!
