Just out of interest the Sunday Times today reported that a 3 yr old boxster-s will only lose 6%.
This must be incorrect no?

Its complete cack. Trust me. I know. What distorts things is that OPCs need a hefty margin. So you as the owner experience whacking depreciation...and it goes out on the forecourt with a huge price tag not far under list...

Boxster 2.7 2000 'V' plate cost new £38k inc Air Con, Met paint, 17" alloys

the above with 24,000 miles books around £22k trade if thats 6% I'd wish they would pay me it on my savings!

That is rubbish. Mine was about £40k new, and I sold it for £32k at almost 2 years old. 20% in 2 years is very good, but nothing like 6% in 3 years...

Thinking of changing mine - 3 year old S which was about 42K new. OPC near me had a look at it last week and offered 25.5 against a used 996. 6%!!??

Told them I would sell it privately.....

I also saw the article & it did confuse me a tad for a couple of reasons.

The example given was a Boxster S (no purchace price given or list of options etc) that after THREE YEARS will only loose £2,038 or 6.1% or in their words £13 per week. (My admitidly a bit dodgy maths makes £2040 equate to a purchace price of £33,450 so a fair way under UK Box S list price (£38k) for a car with absolutely no options then then!)

Perhaps going from original purchace price to the evental sticker price on an OPC's showroom floor a yr later it may not be a milion miles off but 3 yrs?....

I know i'm not the greatest Boxster fan, but if I thought it were posible to run one for 3 yrs and only loose £2k in total, you can bet ya arse as much as I feel depreciation of any kind is the work of the devil and always to be avoided, id some how swallow the bitter pill of £13 per week loss & I'd have one on the drive as we speak!

I have just sold my Boxster S it would have been four years old at the end of May and I got 29K (private sale) for it against a purchase price of 42K still lower depreciation than most, also look at running costs I could not believe how cheap it was to run again compare that to any other performance car and its fantastic

This might interest you.

2% dep is utter junk however it is not all doom and gloom for us Boxster drivers, for example.

In the car industry there are many cars that are measured on dep, the normal measure is a 3year old car that has covered 60k. The leading car which has the highest % value over this period is the Boxster 2.7man, @ a figure of 66.9% of new value. However this can differ depending on which survey has collated the info.

My advise is - a car is not an investment but, for me, a toy that makes me smile rain or shine. This comes with a cost, so do losse women!!

Just think, you could have bought an MGF be worth 42.4% of its new value

Its all because the 42.4% fails to adjust the figures by the fact you got £2-3k saving off the list.

Just twaddle to fill the paper

I read this as well & couldn't believe what they had written, just goes to show you can't always believe
the papers !!
Average depreciation seems to be around 30% over 3years & around 12-15% in the first year so where they get 6% from goodness only knows.
BUT great news if you are selling your Boxter, put it the times for 6% less than new & try your luck !!!!!!

Now those of us that buy second hand lose next to nothing... Bought a high spec low mileage 2.5 Boxster. Looks like only losing 2K over two years....

But what next, now there's the question. After owning a Porsche, anything else really would feel like less! Talk me out of a Noble peeps :-)

Yeah, I'm seriously considering a 98 50K boxster for a while. Depreciation should be pretty much nil.

Tonyout, how about a 993TT next

My ol' man used to say, "Son, there are only two things you can rely to be true in newspapers, the price and the date." Nuff said.

I know I am gonna get flamed for this... but what's a 993 TT???

Whatever I get has got to be a ragtop, but I had a Saab before this, four seaters seem a bit blowy, but I am open to convincing!!

My boxy and my old MX-5 were fine with the roof down even in frost (Well, not frost with the not under 5 degrees on pain of new window window on the boxster)

Could chop in my Nissan and my Boxster and a few quid for something a bit more grunty. What would be a good upgrade? Must handle as well as the boxster, have four seats (If I lose the Nissan)and go like noddy stonk!

Oh, and lose money at the same rate as the Boxster!!!!

One of these;

A Porsche 911 ( 993) Twin Turbo

More than 400hp, 4 wheel drive, and air cooled for that rawer feeling.

Accept no substitute.

This one is at RSJ in Slough

I stopped buying the Sunday Times years ago for this reason...practically every article in every section is a function of a long lunch at the Savoy!

i saw the article. utter nonsense. in the world i live in it's £'s that pay the bills not %'s. I would rather lose 30% on a £10,000 Mondeo than 10% on a £40,000 Boxster. Percentages mean nothing in my opinion. It's the £ loss that really does the talking. Take it from me - I've calculated I've lost over £100k in depreciation in cars in the last 7 years. These articles slate the Vauxhall, Fords etc of the worlds for their high depreciation, but when you look at the amount, it's negligable in the grand scheme of things. These articles - along with Rosie Millards non-sensicle and utterly pretentious 'Landlord Tales' in the Property section of the Sunday Times - are only suitable for lining your dustbins.
