Hi folks, I have an old G rated boiler so it could do with a change. Has anyone made use of the Scrappage scheme:

Boiler installed last Friday, completed claim voucher posted off to the Energy Trust folks yesterday. Will be interesting to see how quickly they reimburse me.

My old boiler still hasn't blown up. Can I get a voucher for a new one now, then use it when I have to?

(that reads like an FAQ!)

I don't think so sadly. Scheme currently runs for a limited time and with a cap on funds as far as I understand. If you're going to change your boiler in the next year or so anyway - do it now and take the £400. It should also save you around 40-50% on fuel if your current boiler is very old.. mine was 25 years old and certainly not efficient nono

I have a voucher, but must have it installed within 12weeks of receiving it otherwise it expires and will be allocated to someone else. Hope to be installed this weekend so lets see how quickly they pay it?

I think it's limited to 125'000 applicants. I know a couple of people who have been rejected (even though swopping from G rated to an A rated...don't know why)

Does anyone know if I have to use a buy and install person. I reckon I can save a lot by buying teh boiler directly and getting a qualified person to install it, but was under the impression they had to do teh whole job?

I've bought my boiler seperatley and cannot recall any paperwork saying it has to be all bought by the installer. So I think this is fine

Think the boiler has to be in working condition anyway in order to claim.

how much are you looking at for the full job?

Our boiler is possibly an antique.

I'm willing to bet that your new boiler wont last for 25 years, and will cost more in repairs than it will save in fuel. hehe

Been meaning to look into this, thanks for the reminder.

Ours is 26 years old, so I'd imagine its eligible!

My folks got their boilers swapped a few years back and it was £1700, thats a combi for a 2 bed flat.

I'm sure it won't, but after 21 years the servicing bill is up to £0 and the repair bill is a staggering £0. I just don't like the idea of throwing away something that works pefectly well (and destroying a chunk of my new kitchen in the process) for a trendy new boiler that by all accounts will break in four years. Viva landfill!

Possibly - but its rental house and the old boiler was not really deemed as safe.. plus it was having trouble heating up the house and one of the old radiators didn't work at all due to piping being 5 millimeter thin and very old.. the immersion heater had packed up as well.. so all in all, it really needed to be done - and, along comes Gordon Brown The Clown and offers £400 - I'll have some of that.. thumbup

Putting a new boiler on a claggy old system isn't a great idea unless you sort the rest of the system as well. It'll need at least a good flush out. Check that the new boiler warranty isn't affected as well.

mate of mine was looking at this but didn't realise that you had to apply for the voucher before installing the boiler - which was completed last week.

His plumber is amenable to changing dates to suit but anyone know if / how the Govt would verify when you had it installed as apparently paperwork says you can't claim it retrospectively?

Too true, I had a new boiler 2 years ago, its already had a new Gas Valve, utter crap it should last way longer than this.
