What do you do when your new Imac won't eject a cd? it plays it ok but just wont spit it out.

And I don't want to hear take it back to the shop and be without it for months thanks.

If it does the same as my Mac Book, just restart it, do nothing and after 10 mins it should eject. There are a couple of other ways but I can't remember the exact sequence.

Google "iMac won't eject disc" and you will get your answer.

Taken off a Mac forum:

A sureshot remedy for the CD!
Re boot (if you can manage that) and press 'c' The iMac should throw it out (if its not a bootable disk).

Or try the same thing whilst holding down the eject key.

Some suggest carefully inserting a blank disc or credit card and wiggling it but I would only try that as a last ditch approach.

It sounds like it is trying to eject the cd but then immediately sounds like it is loading it again. Then Itunes asks if I want to replace the tracks. the CD plays ok and as far as I can remember there was no damage to the cd before I put it in (otherwise I wouldn't have put it in).

Well I am away for the weekend I'll try again when I get back.

thanks for the help and any other Ideas you might come up with.

If it's under warranty, you can get this fixed. Open an AppleCare case, and tell the shop you need a new optical drive.

I had mine replaced, for doing the exact same thing as yours, (under warranty) at Jennings Computer Services in York, after I made an appointment. The nice ladies made me coffee while I waited for half an hour or so.

Sometimes the drive becomes slightly misaligned with the slot of the exterior metal case. So the disc tries to eject, but hits the case instead of passing through the opening. So it goes back into the drive.. That being the case, then only a quick adjustment is needed.

My mac mini does this too. You should have an application called toast. if so. it has a force eject button that you can click and it should eject the cd no matter what is happening.

Put plenty on but make sure you shower it off after fifteen minutes or it stings like a bh.

Restart and when you hear the chime click and hold the mouse while it boots and with a bit of luck it'll chuck the disk out.

whooosh.

Looks like none of the techies here know what Immac is. Either that or everyone thought your joke was lame. Which it was, really hehe

The latter. As for the previous comment about holding the mouse - sadly that'll do sod all squared, other than making the holder look as daft as a brush!
Instead, depress the left mouse button as it boots, and if there's no misalignment issue, it'll cause the disc to be spat out.
Is the disc mounted on the desktop?
Another non-rebooting option is to launch Disk Utility, and you can eject the disc from within that App

As above, try holding down the mouse button as it boots up.

A few months ago I had the PG Tips Monkey DVD on an offer, it was a special disc called an EcoDisc, which apparently uses less bad plasticky stuff when its made and is generally better for the environment. Its also thinner and more bendy than a regular CD or DVD. Being none the wiser at the time, I put in to my slot load drive Macbook, and it wouldn't eject again. After a lot of swear words, and some time on google I found out that these discs aren't slot load friendly. The recommended way to get this out of my Macbook was to hold it upside down, press eject and give it a slap at the same time. Its something to do. Yes, really. On an iMac, if it is one of these Ecodiscs, the same thing would be to lay it face down and do the same thing (if its a flat panel G5/Intel shape iMac with the drive slot on the right edge of the screen).

If it is an EcoDisc, there's probably a little symbol and text on the back of the case somewhere. Nobody ever sees it, I didn't.

if that was directed at me I think we're saying the same thing. OK, rather than 'hold the mouse' perhaps I could have said 'hold mouse button down whilst computer boots'... but I'm sure the OP would have known what I meant.

If it's a new iMac it probably came with a Magic Mouse which doesn't have a left button unless you enable right click in Mouse Prefs. So, as I said, reboot and at the chime click and hold the mouse button down whilst the Mac boots and it might chuck the disk out.

Yes Paul, a bit of jesting on my behalf at the literal meaning of your comment.

Thanks all for all the suggestions but unfortunately none worked.

Apple were also very helpful. But I must applaud John Lewis where I bought it. When I rang them, they asked when I bought it (2-3 weeks ago) they immediately said they would replace it as it was faulty.

Now I have to trust a time machine backup to do its stuff.

Has anyone had to restore all your data before using Time Machine? Does it work as well as I hope?

Did it 2 weeks ago after a disk failure in my iMac. Worked perfectly, and I wasn't expecting much, being a bit of a cynic! Great bit of kit.
