Don't think this has been covered, apologies if it's a repost.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/8563554....

9/11 rescue workers are claiming compensation for dust-related health problems. Bill to the US gubberment is to the tune of US$657.5m, or £437m...

I'm a firm believer in compensation where it's due, but IMO this is taking the pish.

Nope, go back and look at what dealt with in the course of their work, and the length of time of their exposures to god knows what... it was just another building site after all...

Yup...deserve every bit.

It is exactly for situations like these that the idea of 'Compensation' makes sense.

These arent spongers looking for a free buck......these are the guys that were there digging through the piles of rubble, and are suffering health problems now for their troubles back then.

I am surprised there was Asbestos it the dust, banned surely, or was it not when they were built.

Anyway they are entitled to compensation, same as you would be if you inhaled asbestos at work.

I'm in no doubt they deserve praise and reward, they do not deserve COMPENSATION!

It's not the US Government's fault the twin towers were attacked, and the jobs that they did is exactly what was required of them.

If I was a fireman, would I deserve compensation if I was burned whilst saving someone's life?

Why do I need to say it there? The Church isn't sueing for compensation, I don't see how my comments would be appropriate there, any more than walking in Tesco and announcing it on the shop floor?

Well, if it was you, and the abestos etc knocked 20 years of your life, and maybe reduced your last 10 years to a wheezing house bound shaddow of your former self, you may re-consider.

I think that they probably deserve it. They went into what was effectively a war zone - many of their colleagues didn't come out again.

The point that it isn't the US Governments fault is highly debatable.

After all the billions that have been thrown at fking useless bankers I think that this would actually be money well spent. They have serious health implications as a result of doing something incredibly dangerous to save the lives of others.

Not exactly suing because your coffee is too hot is it?

Again, is it the US Government's fault they were exposed to this? (Politics aside, of course)

Agreed 100%.

These arent people who've rung up one of those "accident at work" numbers....

Well I hope they have put their compensation claim against the terrorist organisation.

This should be an interesting court case if they did.

They were sent in there to do rescue etc work without the correct equipment to prevent asbestos getting into their system, that is the governments fault.

You obviously havn't seen the film 'sikko' details the problems of the 9/11 workers many of whom were volunteers not government employees.
