Had a vacancy that came up last week, so called job Centre and after alot of huffing & puffing and lots of "your call is important to us" and 30 minutes of going through every question possible the ad went in, spent 3 minutes on guntree and paid £30 , spent £150 on ad in local press in 2 mins

applicants to date 6 jc

gumtree 70
local press 60

I wonder if anyone in the job centre wants a job...time to stop wasting goverment money.

Did it cost you anything to advertise on jobcentre plus?

Anything run by HM Govt is expensive and inefficient, if indeed it works at all.

Have you noticed a difference in quality of applicants between the 3 different mediums?

Get a login to the employers section and creating the ad is then a 3 minute web-browser job just like a gumtree ad - and it is *free*.

If you want to try out a candidate from jobcentre+ (I'm not sure why they have awarded themselves a +), they'll pay them for a month long work trial too.

The only time I had decent CV's come through was when the job centre advertised the job in the local paper. However it was a free service and easy to set up.

The only thing was; they asked if I wanted to do a 'job match' where I say what I want and they search their databases for the ideal employee, well the one they matched me with did not call me for a week, and when she did it was very clear she was one can short of a sixpack, she didn't send her form back luckily

Don't be daft, people don't go to a job centre looking for a job. They go to tell the bored looking bint behind the counter that they've applied for jobs that don't exist and that they haven't been able to look for work this week "cos of me asthma/bad back/dodgy knee. Can I have me money now?". The people who really need work are the ones scanning the web and the local papers.

Job Centre? Jobs? You silly person.

I tried to use them a few months ago thinking that they would actually be proactive and try and get some of the unemployed back into work.

How wrong I was, they couldn't be botherd to return phone calls or try and match our requirement with relevant people and completely uninterested in working with local employers

Seems like a completely wasted service that ensures that any unemployed scroungers can stay that way and continue to claim benefits if they don't want to work.

A few years back (previous employer) we tried using the job centre to fill a vacancy.
Bearing in mind we had a smart (shirt & tie etc.) dress code, I tried not to laugh at the person that turned up.
She turned up with a shaved head, wearing blue jeans and a puffa jacket. Also swigging from a bottle of coke as she came in.
We were out of sight laughing while the boss held the interview. spin

Once when I was out of work I signed on and tried using the jobcentre to look for jobs. They had those touch screen computers with all the jobs on and you printed out the ones you wanted, lined up for 15 minutes and gave them to the staff and then they would bring up more details of the job including contact details.

The staff there were absolutely useless, incredibly lazy and rude for a start and sooooo slooooowwww to help you with the job details.
The last time I used the place I printed out about 10 jobs I was interested in and took them over to the hag behind the desk where I was ignored while she had a giggle over the phone with someone, eventually she gave me a stern look and hung up, took the pile of printouts and said "I am only allowed to do 3 at a time so pick which ones you want."
I gave her the top 3 and she got me the details, I looked around and saw the place was empty so asked if she could do the rest....
"I am only allowed to do 3 at a time"
"But it's not busy...."
"3 only!"

So I stood up, walked back to the 'queue here' line and then straight back to her desk.

"I can only do 3 at a..."
"Yes I know, here do these ones"
.
.
.
.
"I can't, I'm supposed to be on my lunch break now"

I just sighed, walked out and binned the rest of the printouts.

Came after an expensive refit program a few years ago. Some very nice and expensive ones in the Valleys in South Wales.

went to JC years ago, showed them my CV = science biased and asked them for help, they literally did not have a clue, showed them, what and who was applying for and got told that had to go for interviews with some science job, got to the interview and found they wanted telesales people. We both had the impression that JC staff did not have a clue
