I have invested in equity funds with Hargreaves Landsdowne just recently -they have asked for no proof of ID as it will be electronically verified- nice and simple
Why can't the banks to this??-i have numerous accounts(including several credit cards and a mortgage) with Halifax and everytime i have opened a new one or tried even transferring to another of their accounts they want ID , they want by bloody inside leg measurements.Quite frankly , just to avoid the hassle i would give them my fingerprints and DNA
Is this money laundering excessive ID nonsense typical of banks or is it just Halifax who are OTT??- but if Hargreaves Landsdowne can electronically verify a new customer - why can't Halifax electronically verify an existing one???
Or perhaps there is method to the madness?

Well last year they would not let me set up the pin-code to use online banking in-branch without ID...yet on presenting a cheque and her seeing that my signiture was different from the one on her screen, she let me change the signiture associated with my bank account!

I thought that was a little potty.

I'm guessing they have nowhere near the volume of people using their services, and nowhere near the same levels of risk from fraudulent behaviour. Personally, I couldn't give a monkeys about the security. I'd far rather suffer a minute or two of inconvenience when calling to properly identify myself, than risk someone falsely accessing my account or the services related to it. I've yet to have it become a problem, aside of once recently where my credit card was blocked because it didn't match my usual spending pattern, nothing a quick call couldn't resolve and the transaction was processed immediately after.

I fail to see the big deal really. Criminals are getting smarter, and people are seemingly getting more stupid.

I'm not arguing about security per se- but the wrong use of it - why can it be electronically verified by one organisation but not another??
Like i said i am more than happy to be fingerprinted. It is annoying when i am a long standing customer of two decades with numerous accounts and then have to go thru the whole rigmarole .And i don't always carry my driving licence and passport with me.
I'm just wondering whether Halifax are more stricter than other banks?

Some banks can do this. It relies upon you being on the electoral roll, basically. Blame the FSA NOT the banks.

I had a good laugh today at the HSBC @ Moorgate. The business account manager (who, as *someone* from there will be reading this I might as well mention was an excellent chap with a good sense of humour) said I was the most challenging customer to open a simple business account for he'd ever had, which I'm taking as something of a complement - spent pretty much about four hours there biggrin

Numpties at Halifax have my DOB wrong on 1 account and on all the others accounts i was listed as different people on each one!
I have only moved house 2 times in 41 years can't see why electoral roll should be prob for me
