My brothers 40th is coming up, and I want to get him something a bit different but haven't got a frikin clue. He doesn't really collect anything, he does photography but I wanted to get something he'd keep rather than something that'd go out of date, so to speak...

I thought about a pen, but wasn't sure if I could get one "nice" enough to be worthy of a special gift within budget - any suggestions on pens between £60 & £100?

Or...is that crap? anything else?!!

Does it have to be something that "lasts"?

Memorable:
Bottle of 1970 whisky?

Hire him a Catherham for the day?

Or just both take the day off, go for a good walk, ending in a very good pub, nice nosh and then nice booze until some nice designated driver picks you both up?

I guess it doesn't have to last, it's just that anything he wants he just goes and buys so it really is the thought that counts with his presents.

Which, on reflection probably means a decent bottle of whisky would go down well...

What are his hobbies/past-times ?

What is his standard of living ? (i.e Will £100 be more than he'd spend on something for himself, or petty cash ?)

He works. All the time. His life is his job. He enjoys photography, but rarely has time because... he's at work.

and petty cash, really.

What about a personalised Photoshop picture encased in clear perspex?

For one of my friends, I did him a picture of him driving a Ferrari Dino (his all-time favourite) in the Califronian desert. The number plate read his name.

I know it might sound naff to some people, but it's the originality that counts - and only one picture exists.

If you would like to see that picture, please PM me and I will send it by e-mail.

In that case don't aim for something "nice", aim for something personal. As another poster said - special photograph or something. Something that is expensive in terms of time, effort and personality rather than £s.

For my 40th, my little sis put a scrapbook of my life together with loads of old photographs and funny comments (via some top sneaking around by my girlfriend and all the pictures I have on my PC and stashed in various cupboards). I was overwhelmed and will cherish it (and add to the beer tasting round the world pages). It even had a cars I have loved page, as well as those embarrassing naked 2 year old shots.

How about a decent Leatherman or Swiss Army Knife? Never goes out of date and might actually be useful

(Thats what I got my brother for his 40th birthday anyway!)
