I am considering buying a TomTom One IQ routes with European mapping from the current range. I decided on TomTom basically to avoid the dilemma of researching different brands and because it falls into my budget!
However the decision to get one essentially hinges on the ability to plan my own itinerary. I want to be able to add waypoints and use the sat nav as a guide to take me on the roads I want to use, rather than just follow its instructions blindly.

I've read that early models have a feature that lets you do this, but on the latest models it is omitted from the menu structure? Does anyone have the above (or similar) model and can advise?

Thanks

Even if it doesn't, its no biggie to just add each waypoint as a favourite and just follow those. Waypoint or favourite, you will still have to manually enter a specific point and have it saved.

Models change very frequently, and so I cannot be certain that my information is completely up to date. However, a month or so ago the TT One and TT XL Classic did not have the itinerary feature. The TT XL IQ Routes and all models above that (IQ Routes Live, Go X30/X40/X50) did have this feature. I strongly recommend getting a unit which does have itinerary planning, and planning routes on a PC using Google Maps, then transferring them to the TT using TYRE.

Thanks for the help. I've heard of that TYRE software and intended to use that to plan my own routes. I guess the only way to find out for sure is a trip to Halfords to have a play with the TT one IQ routes and the TT XL IQ.

Cheers

One different point to consider. You obviously believe the One will have a large enough screen for you. As well as the 3d route map, consider the size of the numerically data underneath, and also consider the size of the map if you are trying to review a proposed route. Personally, I find the One screen inconveniently small.

Let us know what you find about the itinerary feature in the One IQ - if it has it, it is generally called Itinerary Planning and is on menu Page 3.

It's funny you should mention that, I had a look at a TomTom one in the window of Argos today and was quite dissapointed at how big it wasn't. I think the XL is the one I will go for.

Thanks again

Thanks! You might have saved me a few quid. How do you get on with the screen size?

I find the small screen size fine, it displays the road fine and the lanes to take appear as a whole screen when complicated or as little arrows at the bottom when not. If your eyesight is ok (I'd hope so for driving!) then the speed, mileage and time info is easy enough to read and the colours can all be changed to suit. I guess at the end of the day it may be worth trying both in Halfords or similar to see if you find much of a difference on demo mode side by side.

I have just taken a Tomtom start back to the shop as it does not have a preferences menu at all!

I thought i was going blind when i couldn't find it. Apparently you need a big wide screen Tomtom to put in your pocket now if you want one that will give you a walking or cycling route rolleyes

Cheers for the extra info. I was going to avoid the 'start' because it looked like it was a pretty stripped down basic version. I will probably get a One IQ XL but Amazon seem to have put their prices up shoot

If you download tyre software you can use google maps to plan your own route the way you want to go and then upload it to the tom tom

Update:

I bought a widescreen jobbie with Europe and it worked until i plugged it into the PC and updated it, then it couldn't find any satellites so i took it back and got a replacement.

When i got the replacement home and plugged it in for the update i was told i could not register it as i had just registered the other one!

I now have a Garmin, lets see...

Oh man! frown Now I've started reading the reviews on Amazon a lot of them are quite patchy!

Does your Garmin have a route planning feature like the TomTom?

I have the old style TomTom and use the itinery for making routes to go along specific roads.
On the last trip, a friend had one of the new TomTom IQ maps.
The itinery planning could be loaded and used.
The problem i found was, it was being to clever and trying to find shortcuts between the routes waypoints.
So only way around this i figure, would be to tell it to go along near enough road by road.

I use a TT740 live and it has itinerary planning, works a treat, last weekend did 800 miles of planned itineraries around Scotland without a hitch.
