964C2 (manual): Doesn't like moving from 1st to 2nd when cold. It never did, but now there's a distinctly mechanical 'clunk' and it needs plenty of effort on the lever. Had it for a year, treat it with extreme mechanical sympathy etc. etc.

Now it's starting to become difficult in third as well when cold, and I've had a couple of times when it's complained when going into gear ('graunch') and I've had to back off to neutral and try again.

Any ideas? Could this be the clutch not quite disengaging properly? Problems with synchros? In worst case scenario anyone know how much a gearbox rebuild is likely to set me back?

It's worth bleeding the clutch as this may help and is cheap.
The synchros do wear and the symptoms are as described; 3rd is for some reason common.
Personaly I'd go for a 2nd hand unit - perhaps a 993 box but there are pros and cons for all options.

How much did you pay for your 993RS box if you don't mind me asking?

Did you buy it new from Porsche OEM? Or get it second hand as a spare from a ex-cup 993 or something?

I believe it was a spare for race team.

Have exactly the same problem with my 964 c4. First to second shift is verging on impossible when cold. (i normally have to bypass 2nd). The chap that does my services had a look and says it needs a new clutch (suggests the gearbox / syncro is just fine). Its in being done right now and I've decided to go the whole hog and put an RS fylwheel in.

btw I understand that worn syncros normally afect shifting into 3rd rather than 2nd. Also I think you can tell the syncro's gone when your gear lever recoils when trying to shift - correct me if i'm wrong anyone!

Well actually I've had that happen a couple of times, both cases when shifting to 2nd.

Hmmm... so I could be looking at both clutch replacement and gearbox rebuild!

So you've ditched the double-mass flywheel for the RS unit (something on my planned upgrade list), did you run with the standard clutch disc/pressure plate or an upgrade? How much is the job running to if you don't mind me asking (so I can start saving!)

I wouldn't worry overly. I think the first to second change on most G50s is a little stiff when cold - the change in my G50/10 certainly is.

The job's costing around £1800 -
No idea about the 'upgrade' disc / plate etc - but I do know that the whole system is being replaced on account of it being shot to pieces!

Pick it up on friday so I'll let you know if it was worth it...
