ring the last OPC that put a stamp in the book - if the chassis or reg show up on previous records they'll say, and can even print the history off (probably for a mountainous fee).

You can certainly try this BUT when I was looking for a 993TT (which I didn't buy) there were several OPC stamps in the service book and I wanted a copy of receipt showing the work they have undertaken. They would not provide this to me as it was against the Data Protection Act apparently!

Not a problem,,i wanted some history from OPC last year to back up my service book, just sent a polite letter and a stamp addressed letter, the photopcopies of invoices arrived with the previous owners credit card number blanked out, still clearly showing the car reg & vin number.

Communication with previous owners can also yield interesting results. DVLA will provide a full ownership history with copies of all the registration docs (giving you name and address info), cherished registration transfers etc from new. Admin fee was less than a tenner last time I did it. I have found that people are generally pretty happy to hear from the current owner of a previous pride and joy.
