According to `Rimmel perfect matte` Cameron, he`s had a trip to Hull & found they`re going to buy a Lexus for £73,000 for the BiB - tonight`s televised debate.
Last time I was in the East Riding they were running 12 yr old Protons - so what`s going on?

Bit more info?

If you mean the police are buying a Lexus (Lexi) for their traffic patrols then do you really think they pay market price?

I suspect he's looked up the list price on the model and not checked what it'll actually cost.

Mind you I don't know why Gumbo didn't say that...

I think research concluded that thieves basically make a 'escape assessment' when trying to escape the police. Basically, when high powered cars are behind them they are more likely to conclude they stand a greater change of getting away on foot and not try and get away in a car.

The best kind of pursuit is one that doesn't start. If this vehicle prevents them and the potential lethal consequences that occasionally happen (and £££ of those), then it's worth its weight in gold.

Of course even he simple logic of the above exceeds the depth a political leader wants to hear about when on a debate.

Just curious, but what can this car do that a £30k Evo can't?

Good question. Public sector tendering has to adhere to economic value. Someone would have to work hard to justify this vehicle over other options. Some things that would likely be considered are:

- Resale value.
- Running costs.
- Purchase price from Lexus - keep in mind the PR Lexus gain from this so there is a significant incentive for them to sell it cheap.

4,500 is an oil and filter service.
You'll get 250-300 miles on a tank with average driving (20-24ish mpg).

The Evo will have better performance than the Lexus, and will be 'easier to drive fast' on minor roads being as it's 4wd not Rwd. However I suspect the Lexus will be used to patrol motorways and A-roads and will do a LOT of miles, so a big V8 will probably make more sense than a boosted 4 pot in terms of cruising and more sensible servicing and maintainence costs.

I still think there is an argument that their vehicles should, at the very least be built in this Country, if not from a british company. there is no reason why they dont use Liverpool built Astras, Sunderland built Nissans, Swindon built Hondas, Derby built Toyotas or (of coruse) Birmingham built Land Rovers and jaguars, etc

So are you saying that we should get the cars from the UK (either UK brand or made here) regardless? What happens if the cars can be bought for cheaper from other competing companies, gives better value for money and is more practical, should we just ignore those?

In reality, Lexus have probably given the car at a substantial discount to the police (possibly less than a Mitsubishi). And let's be honest, it's not like basic response plod are driving these things around. The police need tools to do the job. Let's give it to them.
Anyway let's be honest here, whilst the population is arguing over this, another duck house is being erected....In the grand scheme of things a police car however much it's price tag is the least of our worries.

For GP cars, they are mainly Protons, the odd Astra, and now Chevrolets seem to be creeping in. All running LPG which is a lot more reliable than it was a few years ago.

I've briefly spoken to someone that works in a police worksop.

I was told that they cost their patrol cars down as far as running costs, they even compared how much one type of car used tyres as twice as much of a rate of another car, and then compared MPG and residual values.

I've only sold, not bought but you'd think some of these public sector buyers are getting good deals?

If they're running Protons and Korean cars badged Chevrolet is it really crime of the century to spend some of that money saved somewhere else?

It's a waste of police funding?

How much police time and money was wasted getting Chief Constables to encourage MPs which way to vote over the detention period for suspected terrorists?

How many of those that were convicted for terrorism leanings are now out and how are they monitored?

How much police time is being wasted prevaricating over the DNA retention even though the EU Court of Human Rights told them it was wrong and the Scottish policy on it seems reasonable?

I'd forgotten that quip from Cameron about this car lastnight and it may dissuade me from voting for the tories.

Cameron, "Do as I say, not as I do". He has/had a Lexus LS600h-L and driver. Check out the list price for the rear seat relaxation package, nearly £100,000! But they will say "We got a big discount and the car is green" Also if he gets to be Prime Minister, whats the cost for several hi-tech bullet proof Jags & Range Rovers?
Also the ex soldier who had asked for his help as his MP, but 30+ calls were ignored. David Cameron is just the usual politician.
