Hi guys,

I've just been on the phone to Autoclassica to ask about their new-ish venture, see:
www.autoclassica.co.uk/ontrack/

I'm trying to work out if it's good value or not, so your opinions would be appreciated.

They are offering the following:
You get to go to a track day for £899 plus VAT which is £1056 per driver. Plenty of different circuits are available, all for the same price.....so Silverstone or Brands GP cost the same as Snetterton, Oulton or Donny.
You get fed whilst you're there....very important...the day starts with briefing and bacon butties.
You get to use 3 different cars:
2 are 996 GT3 RS Cup cars (not modified road versions of the GT3) and one is a 993 RS.
There are between 5 and 10 punters sharing these cars. You get stacks of track time, enough to be absolutely knackered by the end of the day.....it sounds like you get 2-3 hours of total driving time which would knacker me.
There are instructors who I think come out with you every time you drive.
If you crash, you don't have to pay the excess, they do.
They use Goldtrack and Motorsport Events' track days. Some are open pit lane, others aren't.

So is it good value?
Well I no longer run a dedicated track day car, but I used to and it wasn't cheap. Major costs include depreciation, servicing, tax, MOT, petrol on the day, wear and tear....so brakes and tyres v. expensive.......
I think my track car probably cost me 5 grand a year all in easily (I blew up the engine on my E30 M3 Sport Evo). For that, you could do 5 of these Autoclassica days with zero risk and zero hassle. I'm warming to the idea.
Autoclassica will be doing 30-odd track days in this format this year and maybe 40-50 next year.

I have no affiliation with them. What do you guys think? Maybe a PHers day out? I'd have to save up!!

If you do a lot of trackdays then it isn't cost effective to hire. They clearly have to make a profit.

However not everyone could afford to track cars like those they offer and on a single day basis the extra cost over using your own car is not that great.

I just wonder how many punters there are who will stump up £1k for a day.

Seems expensive to me.

Coulson Pritchard (search the trackday forum for these words) do days for about 500 GBP VAT included that are similar, albeit with a GT3, Noble, M3CSL, assorted hot hatches etc. rather than pure uberpork.

On these type of days you never drive as much as you think because of stoppage time etc.

I am going on a Bookatrack event in April. A Caterham Superlight for two people for the day costs 499+165(typical trackday cost), which is 665 for a whole day or just 332.50p each.

This is two people sharing one car, not 5-10 people sharing 3. As the yanks say, you do the math.

Also, a Caterham Superlight R could lap most circuits quicker than a 993RS and probably equal the 996 Cup machines. I am not sure if the Bookatrack Caterham is a Superlight R or just a normal one, but you see my point.

One final point - the most fun I've had on trackdays hasn't been in the quickest or most expensive machinery (Ultima GTR etc.). It's been in the most exploitable and most fun little machines, like 968 Club Sports and Caterhams. Don't think you need uber pork to have fun - you don't.

HTH

Domster, have you driven a GT3 Cup car? (I haven't!) It seems to me like a good chance to have a go in one of these beasts and you can't say its not track focused! You only live once and all that…

Depends if you think it is worth the money!

Not driven the exact car, but similar machines I have driven include a GT3, an Ultima GTR and a single seat race car.

I would rather get in a Bookatrack Caterham for half the money than any of them, in all honesty.

As great as a 996 Cup car will be, I wouldn't spend that much of cash on trying it out. My Athena poster of a 911 came down a while ago, and the Ultima one went up
