Lightweight Stereos.

With technology as it is are there any lightweight car stereos on the market ,are there any recomendations from personal use?

Just got a Goodmans CD stereo from Argos for my Astra for 50 quid - that's light (cheap and not too nasty).

Trouble is with that 3" exhaust you'll need a MAHOOSIVE (heavy) stereo to be able to hear any music...

Go to the Max Power show in December!

I think the "lightest ever" car stereo is made by one of the big ICE companies specifically for the McLaren F1. Can't help thinking it would probably be the price of a new C6 though....

Correct (well about the lightest head unit specifically made for the Mclaren F1, don't know about the cost and if it would cost the price of a new C6). Kenwood made this head unit.

How light was/is it, and can someone put it into perspective (provide a weight figure for a conventional head unit)?

The McLaren was used in a Kenwood brochure, don't get a food mixer by mistake!

Cliffy, I take it you won't be smoking in the car when you get it back because:
a) the ashtray's gone missing
b) them ciggies and matches weigh too much

Does this mean that anyone following you will no longer suffer the constant stream of fag packet wrappers and dog ends flying out of your window and into their radiator?

Yeah, that was the occasion to which I was referring but there were certain items I hadn't mentioned in order to save you from any embarrassment. However, as you have raised it, I can honestly say that the sight of you gunning you car from a roundabout, changing gear etc and trying to prevent anything loose in your car from flying out of the roof was one of the most frantic sights I have seen. Even though I was trying to steer through a slalom of discarded items, it was bl**dy funny.

You could always try the fAtkins diet. I remember reading bike tests in US mags where thay used a 7 stone rider to get the best quarters.

Cut your ears off (seen Reservoir Dogs?) and you'll lose weight and won't need a stereo!

This thread primarily came about as i remembered seeing a program,probably "Men & Motors" ,and was surprised of the technology leap between a present day AMP and of one of only a few years ago,the size and weight difference was astounding.

Ive got no stereo in my car at the mo and was just wondering about the weight/size advances of head units and speakers for ICE in todays market.

Don't forget Cliff, if you use a modern head unit with enough power you can fit regula speakers in your vette instead of those monster boxes with an amp in each speaker that Dr Bose designed!
