We've received a cease and desist letter from Google warning us against accessing Google Maps from within our office environment, allegedly against their user agreement?

Anyone else had similar?

I guess it depends on whether you're using them for commercial gain..

We don't use it to insert images into reports, mainly to scour an area prior to visiting or to get a feel for an area.

Seems it can only be viewed for personal use.

I use google maps at work every day. I travel all over Europe and usually use it to plan my trips, book hotels, work out routes etc. I then use it again at the end of each month to work out my mileage for expenses? Am I going to google-prison now too?

I dont know about Google prison but our company are considering blocking the site. It's crazy.

I will just use it through my iPhone instead!

About Google Maps API
The Maps API is a free service, available for any web site that is free to consumers. Please see the terms of service for more information.

Businesses that charge fees for access, track assets or build internal applications must use Google Maps API Premier, which provides enhanced features, technical support and a service-level agreement.

You sure the letter is legit? Sounds a very un-googleesque thing to do.

How do they even know you're using it as a commercial organisation?

My none technical guess is that there may be a lot of traffic coming from one fixed IP and they did a 'who is' look up somehow.

I'm not a techie and have no idea if that would work.
