iphone duplicating contacts when syncing

Can anyone help this is driving me nuts.
Each time a syn I get multipe copies of contacts. I sync with windows addressbook as I dont use Outlook.

Are the names in the same format?

by same I mean are they both Firstname Surname or is one Surname Firstname and the other the opposite?

In iTunes, there's an option at the bottom of the Contacts/Calendars/Mail tab, which when enabled, will replace the iPhone's info with that of the PC's.
Assuming both records are complete, then there's your problem solved.
