Apologies in advance if this is a bit long, or some things don't make sense. Bit sleep deprived due to my monkey of a 3 month old daughter.

Essentially, I am so thoroughly bored that it's unreal.

I have a job, there is no threat of redundancy, or sacking, or any of that lark.

However, there is no sign of any additional money, or opportunities, so I'm going to try and make my own elsewhere.

No payrise since April 2008, only bonus I've had since working here was in April this year, £378 before tax, WOOOO!!!

Setting the scene, from the age of 17 until 22 I was a site engineer on the BAA airports, Stansted, Heathrow and Gatwick. Doing all manner of stuff, setting out, surveying, helping with programming, materials ordering, take offs, method statements, risk assessments etc.

BAA got pissed off with the management of our division on the airports, who were a bunch of pocket-lining bds, and forced them out.

I jumped ship before this happened, and when into design/consultancy for highways, fancied a change and this job was advertised, offering an OK salary for my age, on the promise of rapid advancement and therefore money. This was due to my site and construction experience. I initially applied for an Assistant Engineers position, but they said my design/CDM experience wasn't enough, and offered me Senior Technician. But I am billed to the client as an Assistant Engineer.

Been here for 3 years, working for a private company in a framework contract doing solely local authority work. Job titled as Senior Technician, as I have no degree, only HNC + HND + experience.

One £600 payrise as mentioned, and one pathetic bonus. Contrary to my best efforts, including meetings with divisional director, head of design, and my line manager, no sign of any effort on the companies part to give me any formal training. Or increased responsibilities, new work, or anything vaguely interesting. Same drudgery, after weeks, months, years.

I have proven on numerous occasions that I'm a very quick learner, am eager, and capable of doing more.

However, all good work and opportunities go to managers mates, or favourites. I then get left with work that takes me 5minutes and is incredibly disinteresting. Hence why I muck about on here.

What with having a house, and a daughter, I need to get into a job with at least equal pay, that isn't dead-end.

However, it seems that the only jobs out there, are team leader position and above, or grunts with no experience.

OR they require extremely specialist experience.

I'd love to get into an alternative industry or job, but as above, I can't afford to take a paycut as I need to provide, and most jobs are either well above or well below my capabilities right now. That I've seen advertised at any rate.

Would be most appreciative if the PH masses can give me some advice, tips, or even a job offer wink

Sure I've missed some stuff out.

Live in East Bedfordshire.

I have been in a similar situation as you and sound a similar age and similar industry (Construction)

You just need to keep looking, it gets depressing but eventually you hit the jackpot.

I have been in my current role for 4 years, and have 3 weeks left of my notice to work. Start my new job on the 2nd August.

Persistence will pay off and you will find something eventually.

What sort of salary expectation do you have?

I have worked for Laing O'Rourke for 8 years, 5 years at T5 now on a major rail job. There is work about, the rail sector is always looking for people it deepends on how much money you are looking for.

Is this below you? http://www.allrailjobs.co.uk/jobs/site-engineer-40...

Thank you both. smile

I will continue to look when I have the time. The link to that job, ordinarily I would be interested, however when I see "must be prepared to travel or work away", it puts me off majorly.

I used to work away before, lived in a poxy caravan under the southern runway flight path at Heathrow. NEVER want to have to do that again, be away from my daughter, for a crap wage. If it was more money then I'd consider it.

Thank you, I appreciate that a great deal. If only I lived in the North West of England! hehe

Seems as if all the jobs are where I'm not. Should have thought of this before buying my house.
