I have recently invested in a Fuiji S2000 digi camera which I have been learning to use fairly well at various car shows , family pics etc. However I struggled a bit last weekend in the really strong sunshine with the areas of light to dark in sharp contrast , what's the best way of minimising / adjusting the effect ?

The best way is to take pictures at a different time of day, when the lighting is kinder. smile

Otherwise, you can try lighting the foreground with flash, you'll probably need some manual control of the flash power to get this to work.

I will try giving the flash a go but it tends to give the wrong result with cars with lots of chrome , must be a different answer , the cars are there when they are there , I can't wait until later as they will be gone rolleyes

On another note , how do you do that effect where you turn the background black and white but the car is in colour , I know it's achievable when the sun is really low but is this a photoshop thing you can do ?

Yes. Search the web for 'spot colour tutorial', there's loads of information.
