The mortgage survey has said that they want a report by a roofing contractor on the lack of roof bracing and likely impact/cost. Whats this all about and how much is a ball park figure for any remedial work? House is 1970's build.
I would have thought all the houses on the street would be the same as they were all built together. I'm also a bit surprised that it was picked up as all the mortgage surveys I've seen done have only taken about 3 minutes.

that really isn't for a roofer to comment , you need a structural engineer.
I am guessing there is inadequate collars and wind bracing to the present rafters .
I would guess , and this is a guess , that a chippie for 2 days with a 150 quids worth of timber and bolts will solve the problem .

I would agree with that - prob no more than £500 to put it right - not a huge issue especially if its been like that for 40 years alreadyI am guessing there is inadequate collars and wind bracing to the present rafters .

has the attic been slightly converted at all as some previous owner may have removed braces for more room,seen this done before and had to rectify it.mortgage company will probably want structural engineers report first then get a chippy in as op said couple of days work at most and no more than £500 for maybe adding some extra wind bracing and rafter/truss supports and some bolts

I would be suprised if it was picked up as something that needed a professional report on (and it wouldn't have to be a structural engineer) without the roof having been altered in some way. The most common alteration is for struts to be removed which cause the purlins to be overstressed.
You can go into just about any roof space and find that the timbers don't meet the Building Regs, but they have been there for many many years or decades.
The biggest problem is incompetant and badly trained surveyors who are frightened of their own shadows!
