Hi all

I seem to have a problem with my iPhone 3GS, I plugged it into the PC earlier to put some music on to it, it told me it needed updating so I set it of and went of to have some dinner and came back and there was an error message on the screen and the phone seems to have jumped into 'recovery mode'

It now has this on the screen

So I connect it up and it is saying I need to restore my phone, not good I think but concede I need to do this so I hit the restore the screen and it autorises it with apple etc but halfway through the restoration and it comes up with an error 21, this is what apple say about it

Error 21 and -34: These errors occur when security software interferes with the restore and update process. If you are using a PC, follow this article to resolve this issue.

Symptoms
Security software manufactured by companies other than Apple ("third party") can prevent iTunes and other Apple applications from communicating with Apple servers or resources on your PC. Symptoms may include:

Unable to connect to, purchase, or download iTunes Store content
Unable to activate iPhone using iTunes
Unable to update or restore iPhone or iPod
Unable to back up iPhone or iPod
Unable to sync content to iPhone or iPod
iPhone or iPod not seen in iTunes
Apple TV not seen in iTunes
Unable to sync or stream content to Apple TV
These issues can often be resolved by updating, correctly configuring, or uninstalling security software.

This is where I am stuck I really dont know what to do now!!

I dont have any security software, the iphone has not been modifed or jailbroken or anything.

I think it means your antivirus software, try disabling it for a bit and try again.

Windows firewall on? If so turn that off.

Most of the time I keep getting pointed back to this site for the errors you are getting might be worth a pop.

But use your own judgement if you decide to do it.

Download the .ipsa file directly from Apple or iClarified, then hold the Shift or Control key when selecting Restore in iTunes.
That'll let you point iTunes to where you've downloaded it.

If you still get the error, then disconnect the iPhone, power off, then back on again - reconnect it, then as above.
Alternatively try that before downloading the software - it should be cached, but doesn't mean it's not corrupted somehow, in which case downloading it will be required or deleting the cached one, thereby forcing iTunes to re-download it once you hit the Update/Restore option, without holding down a key.

Also, just in case it was respoonsible, make sure to disable the sleep/standby function of the PC - no point having it shutting down midway through downloading or applying the update.
