Just got an email from one of my best mates who has just arrived into London with he (new) wife, and who wants to meet up. Since I don't want to meet up with him in London (again), I was thinking of something, well, unique, honest, but not poncey, places to enjoy food (no drink for me as I said I would pick them up from somewhere) and our company.

Ideas in the Surrey/Sussex/Berks area?

Running Horses, Mickleham.

ETA: the bar menu is quite substantial. I couldn't finish my ham sarny last time I was there.

That is an idea... I just want to get to a nice setting to chat for a few hours, and have a bite to eat, and get them to get out of London while they are in the UK for the week. There is a winery in Kent with a resturant that is good from memory?

In that case, The Parrot Inn at Forest Green is always good for a leisurely lunch en route to eg. Goodwood / The Witterings.

Alternatively, the Brickmaker's Arms, Windlesham. The burger and chips here set the standard by which all others are measured. Shame there isn't much of interest in the immediate area...

Ah, the Parrot, good call - I think I will take them to that!

The Dukes Head in Crawley Down? - http://www.thedukesheadcrawley.co.uk/

Took my mum and girlfriend there last time I visited home and was massively impressed with the food, the pigeon and black pudding salad was amazing!

Great drive down over Leith Hill, etc. Have the burger and chips - I always do. It's ace.
