Liam Fox reports they are looking at cancelling the two aircraft carriers, because the cost could be used to fund the education of children in Africa. Doesn't it give you a warm and fuzzy feeling. In the week they tell us there isn't the money to repair the crumbling schools in the UK, we can feel good about teaching Africans maths.

Does that idiot Fox not realise how many jobs are dependant on the Carriers? Some of the major components are already built ffs.

Fox is a dangerous man to have in that post. An absolute tool of epic proportions; he clearly doesn't realise that, at this stage, it'd cost more to cancel the contract than it would to build the things!

Sounds completely retarded and back to front. Fix problems at home before global charity starts.

As I read it its this other chap Andrew Mitchel who is actually saying that the money should go to Africa.

Fox is just looking for ways to plug the massive black hole in the defense budget(not that this is a particularly good one). Which would in itself imply that the money couldnt be used elsewhere... mostly because it dosn't exist.

All in all, this Mitchel fella is a chopper.

South Africa just spent $4billion+ on the World Cup. Let them pay for Education programmes in their own back yard.

Well, it certainly worked with me smile

But then the whole issue of overseas 'aid' gets my blood pressure up. I'm aware much of it is bribes, but that doesn't make it any more justified.

Watch out for a big donation to Uganda. They have had a serious bombing last night (over 60 dead). Uganda is one of the few African nations to provide troops to the force in Afghanistan.

If the Ugandans start getting cold feet, the Western poweers mmight feel the need to "encourage" them to stay.

Our 'development secretary' should be pushed to the floor and kicked in the pills 'til she squeals like a girl. It simply is not our job to educate Africa's children, and we haven't the spare cash for charity right now. The need for the carriers was questionable, but it is futile now. Shut up, move on, do something useful.

There was a survey out last week that clearly showed the UK population don't understand why foreign aid is ring-fenced.

Isn't that his job, to scavenge about and try and raise as much money as possible?

No. It is his job to spend the budget that he has as wisely as possible. He is not in the private sector now; 'growing the pie' is beyond his remit.

Don't agree. Raising as much money as possible is very much within his remit.
