web design courses from home

does anyone have any experience or advise on home learning courses for web design. are they a waste of time or is it really possible to re-train and make a new career for yourself.

Just look at job adverts and learn the basics they require eg HTML, CSS, Photoshop. Learn what makes a website good... and more importantly... bad.
