A current topic on this forum (the stolen camper van) has got me thinking about the security of my own classics.

I never have any great attachment to whatever car is my everyday modern driver, and the only reason I would fit a tracker is if the insurance company insisted.

However I would be devastated if one of my classics in particular was to go missing. Particularly as it would probably end up as spares as it's too unusual to sell.

I imagine there are other classic car owners in a similar situation whereby they have an emotional attachment which can't be compensated by a financial settlement.

Anyone fitted a tracker or other additional security devices to their classic?

Never thought about it, but theft is now an ever present worry sadly. I'm putting big hasp locks (like barn ones with a big steel plate bolted through the door) and I remove the cut-out switches when I put them away. On the E-type I've always had a hidden pump switch.

Yes, there appear to be a lot of options opening now for those of us that would require to install such technology ourselves instead of using a "professional installer" (aka oik with ear ring and big drill)

Google tmganywhere as a start.

I've been looking at this myself and also nudging a few contacts in the classic car press to produce an article.

I think tracking is the way forward. Any other security device can be overcome as valuable stuff is simply dragged on to a low loader. Police might actually be interested in helping as well as the technology makes it easy for them.

There are a number of telematic security service providers out there including systems that can immobilise a vehicles fuel/power supply if it passes outside of even a set perimeter plus the usual position tracking facilities.

As an insurer, we have been able to retrieve a number of vehicles, trailers and plant using tracking devices. From memory, those systems which automatically activate on theft rather than those that need to be informed of a theft and then activated are the ones to go for as speed of responce is still key to ensure the device is not removed at a later time.

I think Matrix Telematics do some heavy duty tracker kit for all sorts of plant, trailers and vehicles.

Well worth considering
