So I have a Netgear router for WiFi connected to a Zyxel modem.

Which one should be the dhcp server?

If I make the router server it's great as I can fix IP addresses for my NAS and wireless printer which simplifies setting dependencies for other bits of my network.

However, the router then can't find the DNS through the modem.

If I make the modem server then it sets random IP addresses for all the other computers, printer and NAS but DNS works fine.

I presume I'm missing a simple setting somewhere that will let the router find the DNS via the modem?

Ta.

Cant you just manually enter a DNS, like the Google one for example.

Set the Netgear as the DHCP server and point the DNS on the Netgear to your ISP's DNS servers

or use the opendns servers

also why have a seperate router and modem
surely your ISP would've thrown a router/modem combined box at you
eg. Netgear DG834 series ?

^^If its cable broadband you need a separate router and modem, its only adsl that has combined modem routers.
